The first step to take when the CHECK ENGINE light illuminates is to check all fluid levels. Most importantly, make sure you have oil in the crankcase. If the vehicle will start, idle and move through gears without making any horrible noises, overheating or blowing smoke out the tailpipe, it's likely okay to drive.

However, you will then have to take it into a mechanic's shop or dealership, as the light is controlled by the vehicle's computer module which must be reset. The mechanic/dealer will likely hook up their diagnostic computer to your vehicle's computer, which will tell them what may be going on with the engine. Sometimes it's nothing at all, and sometimes it's serious. They will be able to reset the computer and/or fix whatever problem might exist in order to have the light on the dash go off.

I've driven vehicles with "CHECK ENGINE" lights on for many months, only because I new what was going on and wanted to avoid the expense of a shop visit. However, be aware that it's usually impossible to pass a state vehicle inspection with an illuminated "CHECK ENGINE" light.

Annoying Check Engine Light

It is not likely a scheduled maintenance issue. Manufacturers don't do things that way. You probably have a sensor-related issue that is affected by temperature as the engine warms up. These can be tricky little demons until and unless they become permanent and set a Check Engine light that can be decoded. Things such as the coolant temp sensor and the O2 sensors can cause such intermittent issues. If this is a repeatable condition, meaning that it occurs almost every time you drive, then a repair shop could hook the vehicle up to a diagnostic unit and monitor for the fault to occur, They can capture the data during the anomaly and try to ascertain the cause. If you are looking for a DIY solution, you may have to wait out the annoying light until it goes permanent.

Engine light on the dashboard

Hi Shy Person, The light is called the 'Engine Check Light.' It is telling you the engine management system has recorded a problem which needs attention. As my friend has said already, take the vehicle and have a diagnostic scan carried out and find out what and where the problem is. If you ignore it, one day you may find yourself walking home. Regards John

My airbag warning light is permanantly on

Cluster warning lights

Whenever this warning light or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating that the systems control module (or the system sensor in the case of lights like low oil pressure, door open indicators etc.) has detected a fault, it then disables the system (this applies to ABS,TCS, TCM, SRS, TPMS, MIL, CEL and BCM faults and others) as long as the light is on. You must now have the dealer hook up a special electronic diagnostic tool and "scan" the system for the fault code that is stored for the problem(s)

Legend of Abbreviations. ABS Anti-lock brake system. TCS Traction control system, TCM Transmission control module, SRS Supplemental restraint system, BCM Body control module. TPMS Tire Pressure Monitor System, MIL Malfunction Indicator Lamp, CEL Check Engine Light.
