Question about 1995 Saturn Sl

Temp gauge raises quickly starting cold engine. Told it could be a coolant sensor. Is this a big deal or can I just keep monitoring my coolant level? 1995 Saturn

Any cooling system fault in JULY/AUGUST is a big deal. This sensor is 22$ and can be installed in a COLD engine in minutes.Very small cost for accurate gauge so you can monitor gauge and know if real overheating conditions exist.I would probably spring for a new thermostat while Im servicing that sensor and coolant just for good measure. stay cool

Temp gauge drops out,it goes up half way then goes down


What year , make and model vehicle ! Probably the gauge is bad , but that would be a guess , without testing , hooking up a scan tool to check temp data in the PCM - engine computer ! Thank you for the opportunity. I have a Ford Escape 2001 6 cl and temperature gauge stocks on cold. Today it moves to hot then went to neutral and slowly went to cold again without moving.

Temp sensor/sender units, ussually send a variable earth resistance dependent on temperature, so it sounds like the wiring is broken/rubbed through, causing the sporadic changes due to full earth going to gauge(hot). brocken wire(cold)

But could be a faulty sender just the same, doesnt sound like a thermostat after driving the gauge would still move in relation to engine temp, would start by checking the wiring to temp sensor, also check coolant level and monitor engine temp while driving if gauge is in-op.

My 2006 Caravan temperature gauge goes to red - engine is not overheating. Kick it into a lower gear (automatic trans) and the gauge comes back down. Is it likely the coolant sensor?


Could be.. is the system FULL? Air in it can cause some odd things. When engine and coolant are COLD (as in after sitting over night), open the radiator cap. Top off the overflow res with a 50/50 antifreeze / water mixture to HOT mark. Start engine, turn heat to hot and fan to high. Top off RADIATOR with same 50/50 mixture slowly & gradually. As the coolant circulates, it should bring any AIR trapped in the system (from heater core & engine block) to the radiator where you can replace it with the 50/50 mix. Once the coolant is HOT and stays level - about an inch under the opening, close the radiator. Monitor the overflow res and add as needed. Good luck!

I have a 2008 Chevy Colorado and today my temp


when a temp gauge drops to cold ,it indicates a problem in the cooling system
temp gauge sender units need water to activate the resistance that makes the gauge read so a falling gauge indicates no water around the sender unit --- air lock in the system--faulty wire connection to the gauge sender unit
the ac unit is not connected to the temp gauge so there may be another separate problem there
the temp sensor is an entirely different unit to the temp gauge sender unit and the short term working would be from an altered coolant level from changing that sensor --air lock in system
the temp sensor connects to the ECM to activate the fans and monitor engine operating temp so as to keep the air/fuel mixture exact for the engine conditions
the temp sender unit just makes the temp gauge read
a faulty thermostat will either be stuck open and the engine temp will take a long time to rise or it will be stuck closed and that will cause an overheat very quickly

Am sure you have a thermostat stuck open, i suggest replace it and make sure the aantifreeze is in the correct level.

My temp gauge goes to the third line before fans come on and only the low fan comes on. I already replaced thermostat, engine coolant temp. sensor and radiator flush... any idea why high fans dont come on...


CHECK COOLANT FAN FUSES AND RELAYS. CHECK COOLANT LEVEL.MAKE SURE ITS NOT TOO LOW BECAUSE IF COOLANT TOO LOW . BY NO COOLANT AROUND OR COOLANT SENSOR NOT SUBMERGED IN COOLANT COOLING FANS WONT TURN ON.MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 50/50 ANTIFREEZE AND WATER. WELL YOU NEED TO DRAIN COOLANT LEVEL BELOW THERMOSTAT LEVEL.YOU HAVE TO DISCONNECT MAF SENSOR LOOSEN AIRDUCT 2 LARGE CLAMPS LOOSEN REMOVE 4 SCREWS TO AIR FILTER COVER LIFT UP REMOVE COVER. THEN REMOVE AIR FILTER AND HOUSING, FIRST DISCONNECT MAF SENSOR.YOU HAVE TO DISCONNECT THROTTLE CABLE AND SHIFT CABLE.YOU HAVE TO DISCONNECT REMOVE THROTTLE BODY COOLANT HOSES DISCONNECT IDLE SPEED CONTROL VALVE CONNECTOR AND DISCONNECT TPS SENSOR CONNECTOR. THEN REMOVE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY. Hi there,

Firstly - DO NOT run engine, when guage reads hot, as this will cause costly damage to head gasket & alloy engine head.

The fact that guage takes 1min to read HOT, would confirm the guage IS working properly.

So, other components which are likely to cause hot readings (in this order) are:

- lack of coolant (or leakage somewhere): is there sufficient green coolant at the correct level? Top up mixture to correct level. Repair any leaks.

- collapsed radiator hose: when engine is cold, start engine, then quickly watch both upper & lower radiator hoses to see if either begins to flex inwards (collapse). Replace if either hose is collapsed.

- bad/incorrect thermostat rating : when replacing thermostats, you must ensure it is of the SAME temp rating (they all differ).

- Incorrect Temp sensor rating: the ratings of this sensor must be within manufacturer's spec's.

- bad waterpump: the engine relies on the waterpump to distribute the coolant throughout the entire system. If waterpump is faulty, coolant will not flow quick enough, causing overheating.

If you still believe all of the above components are OK, then have your cooling system "pressure tested". This test should be done, before looking further at other electrical components.

2002 VW Beetle Temp gauge flashing, why?


the coolant temp sensor is by far the most common fault.the only other thing it could be is the sensor in the coolant header tank.if you disconect the 2 pin sensor from where you top the coolant up and bridge out the 2 pins in the connector with a bit of wire.if this cures the fault you know its the coolant level sensor.if it persists and its straight from a cold start then the coolant temp sensor is the most likley cause.hope this helps.

The sensor you replaced was the ECT (engine coolant temp)? Check your coolant level and air in the lines. Do a coolant pressure test to make sure the cooling system holds pressure, If it doesn't, you may have a head gasket problem.
