What kind of oil do I put into the transfer case? Is that why the computer keeps saying check 4 wheel drive?

No, DO NOT use gear oil. The transfer case uses the same type of automatic transmission fluid that the transmission uses. Is the display saying "service 4x4 switch"? If so it is common and the 4WD indicator light switch is bad and needs replaced. It's only purpose is to tell the driver info center what 4 wheel drive mode the transfer case is in. This switch will not affect the function of the 4 wheel drive. The correct fluid for the transfer case is +4 automatic transmission fluid.

I dont have a solution but i do have a question .... can i switch out the ATF for Gear lube in my T-CASE in my 93 ford ranger ???

Yeah your right about waer but you might be blaming the wrong part. With the truck up on jack stands ( all wheels off the ground) have a helper drive the truck at the speeds that make the most noise you'll find it in the front axel or fround U joints or drive shaft splines ( drive shaft jumping ) You watch the parts moving and the joints or the cable that shifts the ront axel in and out not moving all the way it uses a vacume motor under the battery that has a cable going to the front axel. the clutches that are in the front axel have clips on them that hold the side gears that engage and disingage as you turn it on and off the clips break get lost fall off were out and let the side gears do as they please and they runinto each other a click and pop/ the cable and the shift fork that move them also fail but not htat much as the cable fails and the vacume leak pulls on a spring in two wheel and it may not be pulling hard enough/

sounds like the transfer case needs rebuilding or replaced check to see if the oil in the case is dark or colored or milkey looking this is a indication the transfer case need to be redone

Check the oil in the transfer case. If it has lots of metal in it... time for a new one. They aren't the world's strongest.
Another check: Lift the front of the truck, while keeping the rear wheels on the ground. Engage the 4x4 switch (then turn the truck off) crawl under and try to turn the front driveshaft by hand. If it turns and the wheels turn, the transfer case is the problem if it turns but the front wheels don't... front diff issues. Any grinding, crunching etc is also a clue.

I have a leak in the transfer case, just had the shop replace so seals in the engine and now they say transfer case is leaking shouldn't that have been checked then?


the engine and transfer case are to totally different monsters your transfer case controls the four wheel drive if your engine was leaking oil and they replaced some seals most likely they seen grease and oil on the transfer case and assumed it was leaking from the leaking engine that is directly above it even if you dont use the four wheel drive I would still sugest getting that fixed because the axles still turn inside there and you dont want those bearings drying up and going bad

G'day mate yes you have a prob and i think it is empty 'transfer' case Toyota had a big prob with transfer case pushing oil into gearbox , result transfer case empty gearbox full. fix is when you get the transfer case off (maybe have stripped and checked ) then drill a small hole in the front of the transfercase at gearbox filler bung height and run the same oil in both if its a manual that is. hope this helps

sounds like you have a combonation trans and transfer case issues. if you were running youre truck in four wheel on a hard dry surface, witch is not recomended , the trans probibly ran hot. as for the transfer case, it could be a combination of problems. dash switch/ actuator/vacum switch/ vacum canister witch is under the battery tray. all have to work in unison. service the trans first. if the truck has high miles, add trans conditoner, if you do not, it will slip. then the transfer case. refer to youre owners man for oil specs. youre problems are not uneque as these trucks are notorius for unreiable four wheel actiuation. hope i was some help.

Your transfer case is probably an NV241HD and it will take 3.25 qts. I would put in Amsoil, Royal Purple, or Mobil 1, I have used these products and have no problems with them.

I'm not absolutely sure on the tire size for the jeep itself, but I think they are 225/65/R15's. Not absolutely sure.

As for the noise, from your explanation, it sounds like the transfer case is under a heavy bind. Take it off of the road in some grass or dirt and then move it forward a few feet then simply hit reverse. Don't move much maybe an inch and it may release the bind. Once you get the bind off the transfer case, it should slip out of 4wd, unless there is damage in the case/shifter itself.

When operating four wheel drives, with tires of different sizes it causes extreme stress on the gearing in the transfer case. Larger tires don't turn the axles as much as smaller tires. So, this causes stress in the driveline as the front is actually turning slower then the rear. In turn, this will put so much pressure on the gears that it could cause damage and the shifting mechanism will not work correctly to pull it out of 4wd engagement.

Try those ideas, and see if you can get it out of 4WD. Definitely put four tires on the jeep that are all the same size. This will keep you from having excessive stress on the transfer case and gearing therein.
