2001 trooper coolant boiling - Cars & Trucks

Head may be warped, radiator may be plugged. Pull all of the spark plugs to see if there is water on them

Water out of an exhaust pipe is usually just hot gasses condensing on the surfaces of cooler metal exhaust pipes, and is normal. White steam or "smoke" however is in indication of coolant entering the combustion chamber and boiling off during ignition. It is superheated water vapor (more than 212 degrees) and turns to visible steam as it cools when leaving the exhaust pipe. This is the result of a cracked engine block or gasket and can be an expensive fix. Check and monitor your coolant level if unsure of the cause. Also check for milky colored oil on the dipstick - this is a sign of coolant entering the crankcase - also not good!

Need to have the system pressure tested, Check oil to see if there is a brown sludge in the oil filler possible head gasket? and its boiling it in a cylinder, check carpet under dash on transmission tunnel if wet (heater leaking) Is the coolant cap seal OK (not pressurising and boiling the coolant away). That give you some ideas to go with.

If the thermostat is not opening, the engine will keep getting hotter as you drive. You could be low on coolant and have air pockets in the system which would cause the temp gauge to not be accurate. Is the radiator fan coming on when the tank is boiling ?

If your losing coolant water pump may be leaking, not enough coolant will make it overheat. If not that, thermostat may be bad stuck open or shut. Hope this helps

This can be caused by the breakdown of the newer long life coolants, the early formulations broke down and do this exactly as you described, have the tank cleaned and flush the system and refill with the newer coolant that doesn't break down and turn to goo.

If your coolant level is full the low coolant switch is probably faulty they are normaly just a float & the float might be stuck. & Coolant should be used all year round as it is not just anti freeze but is (Anti freeze, Anti boil, & acidity, alkalinity regulator.) It changes the freezing/boiling point (water freeze at o degrees centegrade & boil at 100 degrees but with glycol it changes this depending on what % glycol there is in the system. The acid/alkaline regulator is corosion inhibitor to prevent parts being eaten from the inside out (radiators, heater cores, welsh plugs etc..)

waterboiling in the coolant tank is not a good sign. water needs air to boil, and if you have air in the system, you are not getting the sufficient cooling you need to keep driving your vehicle. take it in to somewhere and havea coolant flush performed on it. if you would rather do it yourself, you can drain the coolant, fill with new coolant and add some coolant flush to the new coolant to clean out the system. NOTE. DO NOT leave coolant flush fluid in vehicle. You must remove the old coolant and fill with fresh coolant and bleed the system of any air to prevent your boiling. hope this helps.

water boils at 200* plus, you might want to check the cooling fans which involves the temp sensor, check into that

Possible thermostat sticking open or coolant sensor out of range.
