Question about 1995 Pontiac Bonneville

ALL LIGHTS ARE OUT

THERE IS NO DASH LIGHTS, NO REAR LIGHTS BUT WHEN YOU PUSH THE BRAKES EVERYTHING LIGHTS UP AND THE TURN SIGNALS ARE ALL WORKING FINE.

No brake lights


Amen to that! Find a good independent mechanic or garage and try to keep them. Both the turn signals and the brake lights are fused circuits, so check the fuses for both at the fuse panel, probably under driver's dash. There is also a brake light switch at top of brake pedal-if you have a test light, you could check for power at the switch, and for power leaving the switch when pedal is pushed down. From there, the brake light signal travels to the rear brake lights, lighting the bulbs, and then to a ground source. Do you see any hanging wires at the rear of truck? Anything look amiss with the wires going to the light fixtures? If any wires got broken, likely at the rear of truck. Are the tail lights good? If they are good, I think the brakes and turns would share the same ground with the park lights, but if all are out, it could be a ground problem for the rear lights. All of these wires going to rear would be in a single harness.
You could have a bad turn signal switch, since the brake light circuit is routed through the turn signal switch.
If you could, have a mechanic or someone check the turn switch and brake lights.

Rear brakelights and turn signals do not work


The turn signal and brake lights are controlled by the turn signal switch.
You did not mention parking lights so I will assume they work.

Could be a faulty turn signal switch or a wiring problem between the dash and the rear of the van.
Do the hazard flashers work on all four corners ?

Brake lights will not work, all other lights work


Look under the dash, on the brake pedal arm. There are one or two switches that activate brake lights and/or shift unlock. Check for loose mounting nut or a missing rubber nubber. Is the brake pedal coming all the way back up? Look on the floor for something not usually found there. These switches are adjustable and it may be as simple as adjusting them. Have a helper look for brake lights on and shift lever unlocked while you push and release the switches with your finger. Depress the brake pedal to get it out of the way. Remember to set the park brake first. Could just be a bad switch or loose connector. Check fuses and the bulbs. Is shifter fully in Park? Also try jiggling the turn signal lever.

The power flow for the brake lights goes like this: Fuse ->Brake switch -> Turn signal switch -> Rear lights. The only difference is, if you have a 3rd brake light in your rear window, that gets its power directly from the brake switch. It does not go thru the signal switch first. So, if you are having a brake light problem, and your fuses are good, check the 3rd light in the rear window, if it lights up (assuming the bulbs are good, no one ever changes them), then the problem is most likely in the turn signal switch, hope this helps!

1998 cavalier, back turn signals do not work, replaced bulbs, front turn signals work, brake light does not work. but brake light works inside the car on rear window.


OK try this turn the signal light on one side or the other then push brake pedal if brake lights come on replace the turn signal switch

No brake lights , everything else works


Sounds like your brake light switch, located on the brake pedal, has gone out. Shouldn't cost to much at auto parts store. Thanks for using fixya.

The problem is the turn signal/headlight/hazard switch assembly on the steering column which the brake light wiring runs through. The part is easy to change and cost about $50 at most parts stores
