Question about Ford E-150

1990 Ford E150 died on the road. New external fuel pump was installed. Vehicle started working again but the new fuel pump hums continuously. Could it be that the in-tank fuel pump is bad?

Effectively the problem can be that the second fuel pump located on the fuel tank side is not working. In this case the engine side fuel pump will have to do extra job and there you get insufficient pressure.

Check if the seconf fuel pump is working by energizing it and testing that pressure is steady.

Check if there is debris coming from the fuel tank that may have clogged the line.

Test pressure out on the new fuel pump, the new replacement may also be faulty (it happens).

To read pressure you can use a simple hand tool gauge like this one:Actron CP7802 Vacuum and Fuel Pressure Tester .

Regards.

D it dies out and hard to start again

It could well be the fuel pump. Or maybe a fuel filter. Replace the filter if easily accessible. Even if it is not easily accessible, you can get a gauge to check for sufficient fuel pressure. You will be working with gas at that point. Unless you are experienced working on cars and for your own safety, get a reputable mechanic to check the pressure.

Cannot determine from the description of the problem if rewiring power to pump resolved the loss of the electrical power or not. Now when it dies, is there still a loss of electrical power? If there is still a loss of electrical power, ensure that the new wiring is connected to the 'Engine Switched' side of the power system. In other words, only when the engine is turned on, power is applied to the fuel pump. If power is good, mostly likely there is a clog in the fuel system (lines) between the pump and the fuel injectors. It doesn't necessarily mean trash was sucked out of tank, today's ethanol gas can trash a fuel system from the inside out. Being a 1990...vehicles back then were less compatible with ethanol. If pump has power and running, fuel lines may need a good flush (multiple flushes maybe to get it all). When it quits, a simple pressure test at the injectors may help determine if fuel is getting to engine. Keep it simple...walk the dog. Make sure you've got good pressure at pump, follow fuel line hand over hand to the next connection, test pressure again, keep going until you find loss of pressure. Good luck...these type of problems are not fun to troubleshoot, not difficult either, just time consuming.

Ran fine then next day all went to /

that sounds correct and its probably electric and in the tank. turn the key to the start position then listen for a small humming noise coming from gas tank if theres no sound then thats most likely the problem.
