I have a engine knock noise on a 2000 crown victoria police interceptor. Is it rod knock or the lifters?

Piston noise makes a noise that goes away when the engine warms most times, rod knocks get much louder as the engine is loaded, Keep driving it and see what blows? Have you checked the oil pressure with a mechanical gage?

Can lifters be replaced

Oh yea, lifters can be replaced , best if you replace cam an lifters together ! Loud knocking is not usually associated with lifters , they usually make a ticking noise ! Knocking noise is most usually in the bottom of the motor , main or rod bearings . most of the time rod bearings !

Replace lifters

I've never heard a 4.6 with knocking lifters. Is it all the time? How is the oil pressure? You may have an oil pump going bad.

Constant knocking on or off the accelerator I thought it was the rods then was told lifters don't know where the lifters are so i can look at them

Lifters would tick or rattle. A knock is usually lower in the engine, a rod or piston in most cases. The lifters are under the valve covers.

Motor knock sounds like rocker arms or lifters?

If your engine is knocking the sound with be at the bottom of your oil pan but if you have lifter or rocker arm problems the sound will be at the top of your engine. One other thing you said your car has 315k it might be time to change your oil pump.

New lifters on 1998 5.7 seem to bleed and rockers loosen readjusted valve lash and no good

Check the pushrod length, you need to use a micrometer that is long though. Tappet or lifter knock is common with hydraulic lifters. It is annoying but has no real concern for engine damage. You can replace the tappets if you want.

Lifter knocks loud what does the knock sensor do

Knock sensor is for detonation problems. These are not related to a valve problem such as yours. Your problem could be a collapsed lifter.

Knocking until car warms up

Sounds like a lifter noise. worn lifters can't keep oil in them anymore so over night the oil leaks out. when you start the vehicle, you will hear a ticking noise or knocking noise till the lifters fill with oil again. only remedy is to replace the lifters.
you could try an additive but it's temporary.
