How does the overdrive work and whats it for

Overdrive is your highest gear used at freeway speeds to reduce engine RPM and enhance fuel economy. If you have a towing option button (usually on dash or shift handle) make sure that it is not activated, otherwise you will not get the benefit of overdrive.

I have a 2002 subaru impreza type euro automatic/tiptronic and have just noticed a flashing green "power" light on the dash. Any ideas what is the problem. Cheers, Tim

hi the autos have a power and economy mode which is selected by pressing a button near the trans shifter, the power makes the car more responsive for passing etc and the economy is meant to be a smoother drive that saves fuel, its not really a prob its just telling you what mode its in hope this helps

I have a Mitsubishi Galant 1998 automatic. Next to the gear lever is a button with HOLD written on it. What does this do?

that button when active keeps the car in gear. Meaning at 55 cruizin the highway when you push the hold button it keeps the car in overdrive and will not let passing gear activate. Its really useless and it was only installed for a few years before going to the power/economy switch also useless....

A little bright light is now on on the dashboard which reads "power." It is unclear to me what that means. I don't have a manual.

This is the overdrive switch. From what I understand this switch can be shut off when you do not need power to climb ect.
When you shut off the switch you resume normal drive operation with better fuel economy.
If you have no control over when this light comes on you will need to have a OBD II reader plugged in to check for codes.

A light on dash saying o/d off came on

There is a small button on the gear shifter. This is the OverDrive switch. When the button is depressed "IN", the overdrive system is active, and the light on the dash is off. When the button is OUT, the overdrive system is de-activated, and the light on the dash is illuminated. The OverDrive is basically the final shift of the transmission, which gives you maximum fuel economy. When the light on the dash is ON, the OD is "OFF", the transmission will not make its final shift, and will lower your fuel economy. It is best to leave the button IN, and have the OD system active. Hope this helps, and Thanks for Choosing FixYa. The graciousness of a "FixYa" rating for my solution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for allowing me to help you with your issue.
