I have an itermittant thumping noise as I drive. It seems to be coming from the drivers side and is noticeable at low speeds. As the tire turns it thumps in time with the speed I am driving. It is not the tires because I have had those checked and they are only a year old. My Ford is 4 wheel drive but that seems to be working OK although not used much. I have no idea what I am looking for. Can you help?

sounds like wheel bearings-1st but hopefully your front disc need turning, or replaced. check wheel bearings by jacking up the front end "CAREFULLY" WITH JACK STANDS & wiggle tires,if you get more than a 1/4'' slack on 1 or the other, than it's shot. Best to replace both sides. "GOOD LUCK'' & BE CAREFULL.
Many times, rear tires that are out of round or severely cupped or feathered, or that are out of balance can create this type of issue. My first recommendation would be to have them and the wheels on the rear of the car inspected. There may not seem like there is much wrong visibly if you look at just the tread of the tires, but a good tire tech can spin them up and give you some solutions, and the inspection itself is inexpensive. Hope this helps.
from the left??? passenger or driver side... this maybe a CV boot problem depending on what side you are speaking of. A CV would be the Ujoint for front wheel drives
Coming from the rear? I could see the noise coming from the front if your axels are bad. It seems weird cause the vehicle would make noises like that in normal driving because they dont change when you switch to 4 wd
if the noise isassociated with "wheel speed" then it is in the rolling parts... axle hub bearing brake rotor caliper wheel or tires...if it goes away on right turns then you are unloading or separating the issue then...so a hub /wheel bearing /axle issue is most likely...does your brake pedal pulse when you feel it..(riding the brake while driving)..does the steering wheel shimmy ?
