SOURCE: i need to remove a crankshaft pulley
Remove the starter and use something to hold the flywheel in place. There is actually a special tool that bolts onto the starter bolt holes with teeth that will do this for you but if you use your imagination and possibly a helper you can get the bolt loose. In the past I have used a prybar (large screwdriver) with a person holding it in the teeth and then someone else removing bolt. Use something sturdy as it has a lot of torque holding it on.

If your going to do do that much work , I would invest in a Chilton's or Haynes manual

if you have a standard transmission, put it in a high gear and set the parking brake.
If you have an automatic, you might have to remove the starter and lock the starter gear with a screwdriver or vicegrip. Make sense? Also, you may need a puller to get the vibration damper off the crankshaft.
