Low / uneven idle problem can cause by a lot of components.

Dirty air filter

Dirty injectors + o-rings

Vacuum leak at intake manifold and vacuum hose.

Bad Idle Air Control Motor (IAC)

Low compression (170 psi + is OK)

Start cleaning and repair these trouble spots and see is there any improvement.

====

For more advance DIY'er then you may try this.

Use a can of Berryman carburetor clean to locate the vacuum leak.

SEE SAMPLE PICTURE HERE

This is a 20-30 minutes job.

Vacuum leaks can occur in following locations.

Intake manifold AND/OR vacuum lines.

Intake manifold is not accessible unless the engine head if off.

You can still check the potential leak by spraying some Berryman near the intake manifold.

Listen for rpm increase after you introduce the Berryman (FUEL) at idle.

Do the same starting from the brake booster unit (the round unit) on the drive side fire all.

Carefully listen for increase of RPM right after to spray the Berryman to the potential vacuum spot.

Get a friend to HEAR the ROM increase or monitor for RPM on the tech.

DO NOT AIM the Berryman into any heat source.

How to replace the tention idler pulley

using a breaker bar or some other tool w/ 1/2'' drive, insert into idler, there is a square hole, remove belt tension, donot remove belt, but lift belt off say the alternator, it would help if you hang the belt w/ wire or something so as not to let it drop. using a 15mm wrench, remove mounting bolt to idler, remove idler. better to replace the entire ilder w/ pulley, as an assymbly, they wear out like any thing else. when istalling new idler, must be positioned correctly. theres a finger which protrudes out of idler, this must be inserted @ engine sideof idler. reinstall bolt, tighten, reposition belt, using breaker bar 1/2" drive again, remove belt tension, so you can get belt over alternator pulley, release tension , done ! make sure belt is centered, and on properly according to belt rounting. when satisfied w/installation , start engine, check your work, remember to visulize existing idler, etc., etc., before you start this so you can put on the new one on exactly the way the old one was !!!!!!!!!!1

Screeching noise from somewhere in belt pattern. Not idler, tensioner, power steering or belt. Does not run hot as if it were the water pump. It does get louder as the RPM's rise. I think it's the be

It doesnt have to be over heating if the water pump bearings are bad. I take wd-40 and spray one pulley at a time on the back side if possible to isolate the bad pully bearings. Start with your ac compressor first because next to the idler the ac pulley sqeals alot.

Humming sound coming from engine told it was the alternator

This noise could be the alternator, water pump, power steering pump, idler pulley or tensioner pulley. Sometimes an automotive stethescope is used to isolate noises around the engine.

My ford taurus doesnt turn on. Lights, stereo dashboard lights all turn on except the engine it sounds like it wants to turn on but it doesnt I dont know what can be wrong with the car??

If the starter is clicking, or the engine is turning over slowly, try replacing the battery or try getting a jump to see if you can get the engine to start.

If the engine is turning over, but won't start, it sounds like you may have a bad timing belt or your timing tensioner or idler has gone out.

I need an idler pulley for a 2003 saturn vue AWD 3.0 6 cylider. All I can find is a 75mm. the old one seems to measure 125mm. will he 75mm work or where can I find the right one. This is not an...

the 75 may work but the belt may be loose if the tensioner doesnt pick up the slack, i dont understand, you said this was not an aftermarket part so its a dealer part, sre you sure you are asking for the right pulley, okay i just looked at a diagram and theres only one pulley and thats for the tensioner theres no idler pulley on the v6 engine i think thats why you are getting the wrong part.heres a diagram to show you, maybe ask for the tensioner pulley.i jsut looked up part and the pulley i looked at was 76mm ,you can also buy the whole tensioner asm, but if its just the pulley you need then that doesnt make sense, try to put the belt on and see if its tight is so use it, i often run into this problem and thats what i do, but im confused that the dealer cant get the part right, something isnt right, you know i just looked at the measurements and that not right, i have never seen a pulley that big on the tensioner, i think its another pulley, like for the power steering, look at the diagram i sent and i will label each pulley and see if it the same one you are looking for, i think you will find its not the tensioner pulley and you dont have an idler so its another pulley good luck i hope this helps,johnjohn2_58.gif

serpentione belt sounds as if it is stretched. first try to reseat serpentine belt. if still a problem then go buy new belt at autozone. also buy some belt dressing. this should fix the problem. if this doesnt solve then you need to buy a new idler arm. relatively easy fix.

it is not the steering pump because you are not moving the wheel it is the idler pulley it might need replacing check to see if the belt is in good condition if it is just use belt dressing on the pully to see if the sound goes away if it does then the idler pulley needs replacing

Absolutely the problem. Timing belts should be changed every 60,000 miles or 6 years.
