Question about 2003 BMW 325

I checked my power steering fluid and it is full. However, my steering wheel is hard to steer? What could be the problem?

1.Is the power steering belt tight? Is it slipping?

2.If you have just one long serpentine belt, check the condition of it. Is it weather cracked on the bottom side? Check the tension of the serpentine belt. It may be that your belt tensioner is bad, and isn't putting the proper tension on the belt. (I found one recently, that at a casual observation the belt looked to be tight. Upon getting my hands in there, I found that the spring for the belt tensioner had broken, and the tensioner pulley assembly was just sitting there. NO tension!)

3.Was the power steering reservoir low, and you, or someone recently added power steering fluid? If the level was too low when the fluid was added, there will be air trapped inside the power steering pump. The cure is to have the engine running, and turn the wheels side to side. Turn all the way to one side, then the other. (It's easier, if the front of the car is supported, so that the front tires are off of the ground. Jack stands, and use wheel chocks on the rear wheels)

When you turn the wheels all the way to one side, and you hear a squeal, or whining sound, DON'T hold it there! Rotate to the other side.

Past this point, it's time to take it to a professional. Only someone who is right there with the car, can diagnose the problem fully.

Check tyre pressure is correct
power steering pump pressure may be low!
or the valves in the rack could be worn o getting blocked

Bleed power steering on 2008 dodge avenger


to bleed power steering, with front wheels off ground slightly with front wheels pointing straight ahead.engine off. remove power steering filler cap.add power steering until fluid level stop dropping,wait couple minutes and wait, add fluid until level stay at full cold mark on power steering cap dip stick. dont over fill.when fluid level stop dropping, start vechicle,let it idle few minutes. see if fluid level drop if so add more fluid full cold mark.then turn steering all the way to left and right with out hitting a stop.turn steering wheel several times, then turn front wheels pointing forward check power steering fluid level.if power steering fluid level stop dropping air should be out of system, if steering turning wheel dont turn smoothly and power steering fluid look light tan color air getting in the system.check all power steering lines to rack and power steering pump for leaks.be sure you replaced all the power steering lines with new o rings if not you will get a leak.if you find a leak, you need to fix the leak and bleed system again.dont drive vechicle if your steering dont feel right,have vechicle towed to a garage.

Have you checked the power steering fluid level? The reservoir for the fluid will be at the front of the engine, where the belt runs the power steering pump. If it's low or out add a little power steering fluid till full, then start car and slowly turn wheels back and forth from stop to stop-not too ******* the stops (when the steering won't turn further that way...that's what I mean by stops)....Turn wheel one way full travel, then reverse and turn the other way. Check the fluid level again, and add as needed.
If fluid is not low, the belt may be too loose to make the power steering pump work, or you may have a bigger problem that needs professional attewntion.

Power steering pump replaced, start to work ok, after 10 milles driving, steering wheel is hard, like pump is not working, under hood everything look ok.

How do you fix the power steering of a 2006 chevy malibu, when drive the steering wheel locks up and its very hard to turn.


a few possibilities.
Low power steering fluid. check for correct amount on pump filler measureing guage.

Loose power steering belt. check to see if the belt slips over the power steering pulley while trying to turn the steering wheel. may need an assistant.

last, but most expensive. Rack and pinion steering bar is defective and needs replacing.

The power steering isn't working. The reservoir was empty and I added power steering fluid and it still very hard to steer

My power stering is not working ok i have replace the power stering pump and i have check the sector and it is ok the car work well when it is runing but when i stop it turn hard i have check if it is air...


Power Steering Fluid Filling & Bleeding
  1. Repair the power steering system.
  2. Turn the engine OFF.
  3. Raise the vehicle so the front wheels are off the ground.
  4. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left.
  5. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir to the FULL/COLD level and leave the cap off.
  6. Have an assistant watch the fluid in the reservoir while you turn the steering wheel fully to the right and fully to the left at least 20 times. NOTE: On systems with long return lines or fluid coolers, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock at least 40 times.
  7. Add fluid as needed to keep the fluid level at the FULL/COLD level.
  8. Install the reservoir cap and start the engine.
  9. Center the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  10. Run the engine for about 2 minutes.
  11. Turn the steering wheel in both directions and verify correct power steering operation.

WeMy power steering fluid was leaking I tool it to the shop they told me It was the pump so I brought a new pump and got It put in and now I still cant turn my steering wheel

Steering is hard to turn


If it is hard to turn in both directions check power steering pump fluid level. Also with both front wheels off the ground key on engine off, turn the tires manually at one of the front tires and turn with the steering wheel engine off. Check for binding (they will require effort to turn) you are looking for a change in effort.

Hi:
If you have power steering, first check to see if you have fluid in the power steering reservoir. If you don't have power steering, you most likely have binding in the rack and pinion unit, and that has to be replaced as an assembly, and is a bit pricey, so check your fluid first.

If the fluid is full the power steering pump could be bad, but usually they growl, and are noticeable.

HOW TO REPLACE A POWER STEERING HOSE


FIRST OF ALL YOU HAVE TO REMOVE POWER STEERING FLUID.USING A SUCTION GUN OR LARGE SYRINGE.REMOVE MUCH FLUID AS POSSIBLE.WHEN DONE REMOVING POWER STEERING FLUID.YOU NEED A INLINE WRENCH AND OPEN BOX END WRENCH TO REMOVE THE POWER STEERING HOSE.YOU HAVE TO REMOVE POWER STEERING LINE FROM THE RACK.UNDER THE CAR SAFELY RAISE AND SUPPORT VECHICLE. THEN REMOVE THE TIRE OR WHEEL.THEN REMOVE THE INNER FENDER SPLASH SHIELD.ITS GOING TO BE A TIGHT FIT AND HARD PLACE TO GET YOUR HAND TO REMOVE THE POWER STEERING LINE FROM BOTTOM.WHEN DONE.MAKE SURE NEW POWER STEERING HOSE OR LINE HAS NEW O RINGS.WHEN INSTALLING THE THE NEW STEERING HOSE.WHEN ALL IS DONE BLEED POWER STEERING SYSTEM. FILL UP POWER STEERING PUMP TO CORRECT FLUID LEVEL.THEN LET IT SET FOR 2 MINUTES UNDISTURBED.THEN START THE ENGINE RUN IT FOR 2 TO 3 SECONDS.ONLY CHECK THE RESERVOIR AND ADD MORE FLUID AS NECESSARY.REPEAT THE OPERATION UNTIL THE FLUID LEVEL REMAIN CONSTANT.NOW RAISE FRONT OF THE CAR UNTIL THE WHEELS CLEAR THE GROUND START THE ENGINE AND INCREASE THE SPEED TO ABOUT 1500 RPM.NOW TURN THE STEERING WHEEL GENTLY FROM STOP TO STOP CHECK THE FLUID LEVEL.LOWER THE VECHICLE TO THE GROUND WITH ENGINE STILL RUNNING MOVE THE CAR FORWARD SUFFICIENTY TO OBTAIN FULL RIGHT LOCK FOLLOWED BY FULL LEFT LOCK BUT DONT HOLD THE SREERING WHEEL FIRMLY AGAINST THE STOPS.RECHECK THE FLUID LEVEL IF THE FLUID IN THE RESERVOIR IS EXTREMELY FOAMY ALLOW THE CAR TO STAND FOR A FEW MINUTES.WITH ENGINE OFF.WHEN JOB IS FINISH.
