Question about 1988 Ford Mustang

I have an 88 mustang gt w/ 160,000 it runs fine for a week or two than gives me problems, wolnt stay running then if i let it sit for a while it will run fine again

My 96 mustang gt 4.6L automatic is running like

vacuum leak. it wiil cause a misfire code to be set because too lean from vacuum leak.

Sounds like you have timming chain problems. You can check this by putting your harmonic balancer on the mark that shows top dead center or 0 degrees, Once you have that done pull your number one spark plug and see if the piston is at the top of its stroke. You can also check this by loosening the hold down bolt on your distributor and while you have someone cranking the engine over move the distributor one way and then the other. If the engine tries to fire then you have probably jump some teeth on your timming gear which is the result of just plain old wear. Be careful when doing this as to not get your hand in the cooling fan!!!! If your mustang has high mileage on it then this is probably your problem. I recommend a double roller timing chain as a replacement because they last longer. Good luck

sounds like fuel pump getting 88 mustang did the same thing.if it starts and goes again after sitting a while ill bet thats the problem.

test the fuel pressure first. use a guage and watch it till engine dies. also the guage has a bleed off hose, run a small amount of gas into a cup and check for water

Since the date in this post was a few years ago, I'm just gonna put it on here for someone else who may encounter the same issue. My '96 did the same exact thing. It was IAC (idle air control) valve. $50 and runs perfect...

Ford Mustang will start, but then cuts off.

try to keep it running by keeping your foot on the gas if this works its a bad IAC motor
