Brakes make a whistle noise when applied and sometimes a low grown or grinding when coming to a slow stop or start.

A grinding or rumbling noise can also be symptoms of a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint in a driveshaft. A worn wheel bearing can also cause a 'whistling' sound (as can a worn CV joint).

A grinding noise with brakes is either worn pads causing metal to metal contact on the brake disk/rotor, or the brake backing plate catching on a spinning rotor ... or a loose/missing anti squeal brake shim (they stop the pads from rattling and vibrating).

However, as you say a mechanic has looked at the brakes and can't find anything wrong .. I think I would begin to suspect a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint on the driveshaft (front wheel drive cars).

I have a 1997 Cutlass Supreme. The low trac light comes on when coming to a stop. Also, the front passenger side (near the wheel) makes a constant "crunching" and clicking sound. I'm thinking whee

Sounds like Wheel Hub Bearing & the internal Wheel
Speed Sensor as well, if that is the type hub you have

I would suspect some attention to the brakes may be in
order ,also. Have to strip them once a year to clean off rust
& lube things

I have a 2004 pontiac grand am and it is making a whistle sound when I drive what is wrong?

It whistles because it does not know the words. Common experience tells us that whistling comes from sucking or blowing air or other gas, not a liquid, through an orifice. Lots of orifices on a car so start by having someone listen under the hood, after opening it, as it idles and even with some revving up and down a bit. Some clue may be given as to the location of the whistle.

If you look closely under the hood you will see many small diameter hoses, usually black, which transfer engine vacuum hither and yon to do work or throw switches as the car goes about its business. Following each of these hoses to their ends and making sure they are still connected could lead you to a whistler.

There is a large wide black belt under the hood called a serpentine belt, these have been known to screech as they age and/or become loose. If the whistle noise is actually a screech, then I think you could use a squirt gun to spray some water on it as it spins and if the noise briefly goes away until the water dries, you may cure your whistle with a new belt.

Someone who knows what they are doing is most likely going to have to put their eyes and hands on the car to figure this out.

ABS light comes on during tight left hand turn

Check your wheel speed sensor wires near the front wheels. They could be binding or stretched on the hard left. It could also just be a bad harness to the sensor - I have had several of these go bad from all of the constant motion, salt, and other environmental issues.
If you have an ODB-II scanner with ABS, you can read the code and it will tell you which side is giving you the problem.

Howling Sound coming from Front right wheel side

I think its a problem with your timing belt. It is too tight. Thats why it is making such a sound. Tell your mechanic to loosen it a bit.
