I need a diagram of the location of the thermostat in a 1996 Dodge Caravan

You didn't specify the engine size, this is for the 3.0L:

follow upper rad hose to housing on engine, it will be behind that housing.

you didn't mention your engine size. but generally you follow the top radiator hose to the engine. The hose will connect to an elbow. The thermostat is under the elbow- usually retained by 2 bolts.

Get the replacement belt, and then note the pulleys that have smooth finish, and note the pulleys that have the grooved finish.

Just 'thread' the serpentine belt, one pulley after another alternating between the smooth and grooved until the last remaining pulley is the tensioner pulley.

Use the breaker bar to allow the pulley to accept the belt, and you're done.

All you need to know is the year and engine size(which you know) and the parts store you buy the thermostat at will know the correct one.

The Thermostat is located behind the Thermostat Housing on almost all Vehicles. There are 3 different Engine types they used in this Caravan this particular year. I have uploaded you pictures showing the locations of the Thermostat and Housings for each Engine in .pdf format. You can download them by clicking HERE. The engine cooling thermostats are a wax pellet driven, reverse poppet choke type. If you follow the Upper Radiator Hose up to the side of the Engine, it connects to the Thermostat Housing.


You must drain the Cooling System before you remove it. I went ahead and made you up the replacement procedures for replacing this Thermostat. You can download it by clicking HERE.
