Look at the wiring to the alt. if the is a single white wire going into the alt.,,, start the engine and have a partner wiggle the connector / wire and watch the lite. If the lite goes on and off with the wiggles ,,, change the wire connector. You may try cleaning with WD-40 or simular, but chances are the problem will be back.

You need to connect a meter across the battery terminals to determine whether the battery is being charged by the alternator. Compare the voltage at rest to that obtained when the engine is running. It should be about 12 volts at rest and then rise to approximately 14 volts. The voltage regulator (which controls how much voltage is being produced by the alternator and operates the charge lamp on the dashboard) on some vehicles is separate to the alternator. If the voltage is rising to within specifications as previously mentioned, the wiring to the lamp may be being earthed somewhere along it`s run to the alternator/regulator. Ian

P.S. Presuming that the alternator IS charging the battery, Does the alternator have one thick red lead going to it plus two or more smaller wires? The regulator is probably separate to the alternator, in which case you need to trace these smaller wires to the control box which will control the lamp. If there`s only one thick red wire going to the alternator, the regulator is built into the alternator, this means that the computer which controls the dashboard lamps and displays will be monitoring the voltage and if the voltage drops below a predetermined level, it will illuminate the lamp. It may be worth your while disconnecting the battery for 10-20 minutes or so to reset the computer but make sure you`ve got the radio codes etc. Ian

Check for proper ground to body and engine, check for proper gauges on cables used.

THE ALTINATOR ON MY PICKUP TRUCK IS NOT PUTTING OUT AMPS TO THE AMP METER. THE BATTERY IS NEW AND THE ALTINATOR IS NEW ALSO, WHY WON'T THE ALTINATOR PUT OUT AMPS ?undefined

What model and make is your truck?
Older vehicles differ widely from later ones. Is the regulator separate from the alternator? If so, you might need to replace the regulator.
On some vehicles, the regulator was booted by the indicator lamp on the dash. If the light does not work (blown), the alternator does not charge.

Used parts such as starters and altinators don't last. It might **** but it sounds like you need to buy a new starter, altinator, and battery. Or just start with buying one at a time.
