The glow plugs should only light for a maximum of around 20 seconds prior to starting the vehicle.

The Glow (or heater) plugs are used to aid cold starting, being activated in certain cold engine conditions. The glow plugs can operate in several ways but the most common is to switch them on during cranking or while the ignition is switched on. The components will reach their operating temperature in a matter of seconds.

The glow plugs are wired in series and are fed with battery voltage for a set period of time, which is determined by the 'glow plug timer relay'.

I could not recommend the solution you have adopted with the button as the relay is the correct way to activate the plugs. It is also possible however that the problem you are experiencing may be unrelated to the plugs as the car is starting after you prime the pump. You should check your diesel filter to ensure it has not picked up water from numerous fills or other debris - drain and then change the filter to rule out any cause of this nature.

I would also advise you to revert back to the proper relay timer method for activating and deactivating the heater plugs. Just put a new relay in!

Hope this helps. Please remember to rate my answer. Many Thanks.

My Rodeo blows the no. 8 'ENGINE BACK.L' fuse when the ignition is turned on. It is a 15 amp fuse & associated with the glow plugs.

Does the fuse control the relay for the glow plugs because I would think a 15a fuse would be too small for the glow plug circuit itself...

Had 04 transit connect for 6 weeks. always started fine till week ago when turned cold. glow plug light only shows for about 1 second, replaced glow plugs but still the same. can only start every morning...

Sounds like the timer is bad. Since you have power when warm, the power relay must be giving the timer juice. The way it is suppose to work is you wait until the glow plug light goes out and then try to start. In cold weather it should take longer for the glow plug light to go out.

Glow plug burn

It sounds like the timer is not turning off the glow plugs as is should. At least not consistantly. You may want to cycle them several times and verify they do turn off every time.

Ford focus 1.8tdci glow plug light only staying on for about 1sec in sub zero temperatures

When this problem occurred this usually means that one or more of the engine glow plugs is burnt out, the decrease in resistance sensed by the glow plug controller drops and this causes the timer to turn off to quickly, have the glow plugs tested and the glow plug controller replaced if needed.

Car doesn't start when the glow plugs don't work

In most cases it is not the relay, although the Glow plugs operate on a reduced voltage, that is where to start checking.
Glow plugs are installed just like Spark Plugs in a Gasoline Engine, use a Long Shank removal socket to extract them, ease them out and make sure they are a snug tight fit on installation
Remove ALL Glow plugs. Set up a 12 or 14 guage wire bared at both ends, that will be long enough to connect to the Positive terminal of the battery, to the opposite Negative.
With the Positive end of the wire connected, take a Golw plug and Press it against the Negative Terminal of the Battery, and at the same time touch the Pos. Wire on to the Center Power terminal of the Glow Plug. If the Plug is GOOD it will start to SMOKE in 3-4 seconds and get HOT. Repeat the procedure with the other 3. If the failure rate is more than 2 out of 4 discard all plugs and install new. If less, replace only the junk ones. If all plugs are Good replace the Power Timer relay on the Vehicle. It is cost effective to check the Plugs first. But at the same time with a Volt Meter check the Power reading at the Glow plug Connection terminal.

Best of luck in your endevours.

Did you ever find a solution to this? I have a 2000 Hyundai Galloper (basically the same car) and I am having the exact same problem. I have replaced the glow plugs 3 times in the past 12 months.
