Sounds like your crankshaft sensor is faulty.I would change that first.

How to switch 4 wheel drive back to 2 wheel drive in my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee

that is because you have Part time 4wd? (what do you have)?
and must not drive on pavement free of ice.
its now winding up the drive train, bad for it too.

drive, to dirt, sand, gavel or grass and shift out of 4wd.
or jack up 1 tire, and same,
one tire must be on slippery surface. at least.

this happens on all PT 4wd
or using LOCK on AWD. dont.

I have just bought a 1998 jeep grand cherokee laredo 4.0 inline 6 242 cu. It seems as if the power of the engine isnt going to the wheels. sometimes when I floor it there is a delay, also the check engine...

Hi there:

If the Check Engine Light comes on in the city but goes off on the freeway, then the fault is present during city driving conditions. Pay attention to whether or not the vehicle runs or drives any differently when the Check Engine Light illuminates. If vehicle performance does change, drive the car as little as possible and take it to be checked by a service professional as soon as possible. If there is no change in vehicle performance, you can drive home, but have it inspected as soon as possible. In this condition, you run a risk of the vehicle dying or not starting.

Additionally, iIf the Check Engine Light illuminates constantly during driving with no noticeable driving or performance problems, there is a permanent fault in the emission control system. When this happens, the computer that controls the emission system usually has a backup program that runs while the fault is present. (These backup programs are often referred to as "limp home" mode programs.) You should get the vehicle serviced as soon as possible, but in most cases, the vehicle will continue to operate, though you run a risk of it dying or not starting.

Are you try selft test, turn key (without start engine) On Off, On Off, On and count check light and pauses in order to read codes. Three flases and pause and two flases measn a 32 code. Note this and send us for other details.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

The engine dies out on its own and will sometimes crank right back up and sometimes you have to wait for up to 5-10 minutes before it will crank again.

it really has to checked the right way before changing any parts. it could be a bad tps, crank or cam sensors. have your fuel system check also.

My 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Will die going down the road. Sometimes it starts back up without me touching the key.other times I have to wait a few minutes before it will crank again.Any suggestions? Thank...

I've got to be reading this incorrectly...You are driving, the engine turns off...you pull off the road? And then without touching the key the engine re-starts, but you haven't touched the key? Or, sometimes you need to sit there for a few minutes and then turn the key to start it?

95 jeep grand cherokee died wont start,it cranks, checked fuel pump replaced filter cleaned injecters still nothing

Check to see if getting fire from coil or plugs. If not, your problem is most likely the Crankshaft Position Sensor.

$18 - $21 dollars. CPS is on left side of where transmission buckles to fly wheel, near top edge. One bolt and plugs in. (2 wires in plug)

Drive shaft to 4-wheel gear box might be in your way. No prob. 4 small bols and lower front end of drive shaft.

About a 45 - 60 minute job for shadetree mechanics, like myself, and 2 coffee breaks.

Prior syptoms of sensor going bad is engine rumbling real bad when coming to a stop, and sometimes dies but will start.

Hope this it.

Having trouble keeping my 98 jeep grand cherokee running

i recommend cleaning the throttle plates. they are located unter the intake hose form the engine to the air filter housing. if you open them with the engine not runniong you will see they will be covered in carbon. use a good carb cleaner and a rag to wipe them clean
