My 2001 Dodge Stratus wont shift...whats the problem?

The transmission in this car is computer controlled, so what must be done first is to have the TCM (transmission control module) scanned for fault codes that might explain the problem, without the scan results you are just guessing, and that can get expensive. Aamco transmission shops does this testing for free.

the trans computer has seen a problem possible a bad sensor, or an internal problem, and puts it into a safe mode, or limp home mode , it wont shift , it will stay in 3rd gear, this way this reduces the possibility of further damage trans damage, when you turn the ignition off and back on it resets the tcm, my advice is to take it to your local dealer, they can diag your trans as they know the product, i dont advise pep boys, or discount auto parts.

Car does not shift when cold

you can try a bg trany flush and also have the shift pattern reset, what you do is unhook battery for 3min, then connect batt back start and put in low gear start to drive and shift up as you would what it to shift do the same until you reach drive then it should shift that way unless theres atrany problem, but try that bg flush first, hope this is helpful.

there are pressure sensors inside your transmission which tell it when to shift and whether to shift up or down. i would bet it is has something to do with those. if you take it to a shop, its probably 150-200 to fix, but better than having to rebuild the transmission, which could be around 800. the shop can plug a reader in and drive it around the block and tell you if the sensors are out.

Since all gears shift hard, and the transmission is in correctly (i assume) then it will be a linkage or spring type of problem in the shift mechanism or hook up to the trans. I also assume you have put back all the correct parts.... Last time i r/r a tranny that was like this, i didn't hook up the shift levers right... Rick
