Question about 2007 GMC Yukon Denali
On all automatic lift gates you have an ecm that operates the rear lift motor module that opens and closes the rear gate. If it goes up and makes a grinding noise and then goes back down. Its more than likely that one of the gears have stripped on the module not making it able to lock itself into position. If the gate is operating speratic you may want to have a dealership check out the ecm that operates the lift gate and program you another unit, for instance if it goes up perfectly one time and then goes half way up and then closes. These automatic lift gates can be broken easily by the bag boy at the supermarket by trying to force the gate closed by hand causing the gears to strip. Hope this helps.

Try removing your shocks/struts for the lift gate. once removed, check to see if they fully extend in and out of the barrel. You may have bent shocks/struts. Also, check to see there is nothing preventing the lift-gate from opening such as a bolt or acorns between the spoiler and the roof...
