Circuit Description
Moving the ignition switch to the START position sends a 12 V signal to the PCM Ignition Crank Sense. The PCM verifies that the transmission is in the PARK or NEUTRAL position. The PCM then grounds the control circuit of the START relay. When the START relay is energized it allows battery positive voltage to the starter solenoid S terminal.
Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
Does the engine crank?
Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems
Go to Step 3

3

Is the security indicator flashing?
Go to Diagnostic System Check - Theft Deterrent in Theft Deterrent
Go to Step 4

4

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. With a scan tool, observe the Starter Relay Command parameter in the PCM data list.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
Does the scan tool display Yes

5

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Verify that the transmission is in Park or Neutral.
  3. With a scan tool, observe the IMS parameter in the Transmission data list.
Does the scan tool display Park or Neutral?
Go to Step 12
Go to Transmission Internal Mode Switch Logic in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65- E

6

Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
Do you hear the STARTER relay click?
Go to Step 9
Go to Step 7
Your best bet is to take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop. Before you replace a part an find out that's not what's wrong . If you new how to test the starter circuit , you would start at the starter relay .

Removing the Manual Lever Position (MLP) sensor

As of 1994, the neutral safety switch is referred to as a Manual Lever Position Sensor (MLP).
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  3. Disengage the harness connector from the MLP sensor.
  4. Remove the 2 sensor attaching bolts and remove the sensor.
To install:
  1. Install the MLP sensor and install retaining bolts. Do not tighten, the sensor requires adjustment.
  2. Adjust the MLP sensor then tighten attaching screws to 80-100 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm).
  3. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

ADJUSTMENT

C6 Transmission
  1. Hold the steering column transmission selector lever against the Neutral stop.
  2. Move the sliding block assembly on the neutral switch to the Neutral position and insert a 0.091 in. (2.3mm) gauge pin in the alignment hole on the terminal side of the switch.
  3. Move the switch assembly housing so that the sliding block contacts the actuating pin lever. Secure the switch to the outer tube of the steering column and remove the gauge pin.
  4. Check the operation of the switch. The engine should only start in Neutral and Park .

Adjusting the MLP sensor

Park is the last detent when the manual control lever is full forward. Return 2 detents toward the output shaft for Neutral.
  1. Position the manual control lever in Neutral .
  2. Insert Gear Position Sensor Adjuster tool T93P-700 10-A or equivalent, into the slots.
  3. Align all 3 slots on the MLP sensor with 3 tabs on the tool.
  4. Tighten the attaching screws to 80-100 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm).

I hope help you. Good luck (rated this help).

SOURCE: neutral safety switch '97 eclipse

Under dash driver side look behind the upper arm of clutch pedal and you should see a green and black wire coming from the button (switch) assembly on the firewall. The wires go up above the clutch pedal. About in the middle of under dash on the left side you should see a white connector these wires run to. Disconnect. I just had the problem and not only starts now but not stalling like it was but it's only been one day but tested it pretty good.

I need the colored neutral safety switch wiring diagram on a 2002 pontiac bonneville

Sending a pic of the plug of a 2002 grand am. It is the same as yours. Just a note. The colors could be different. but the location of the wire in the plug are the same. I don't recommend you bypass this. It will start in gear. Shifter cables do break or stretch. You might think it is in park, but it isn't. E and G are your wires.

2002 pontiac bonneville doesn't start. Battery is good and starter is fine but starter doesn't ry to start. No click or anything. Is there a schematic I can look at to trace and find the problem

Look into the neutral safety switch. To test: Foot on break; key in start position and hold it there; shift trans slowly through the neutral range...if you get action, adjust or replace neutral safety switch.
