An engine is more likely to overheat when the thermostat is not in the engine. The best way to check the thermostat is just to buy another one, there only about ten bucks and they really need to be replaced every year anyway. I hope that helps you out!

I have a 2005 dodge durango that's over heating.

The basic answer is not enough coolant flow or not enough air flow thru the radiator. You'll have to find out if the coolant is flowing when the thermostat is open, is the system full of fluid, and is there enough air flow thru the radiator.
Does it get over 220 degrees if you are moving and at idle too ?

The engine over heats while idling. Took robe radiator cap off n coolant is running thru top hose so the thermastat is working I guess

Is the fan running? The draft through the radiator may be enough to cool it when driving. Check that the radiator fins are clean. You can check the thermostat by starting with a cold engine, then warm it up and hold the top hose and it will get hot when the thermostat opens. If it doesn't then the thermosta needs replacing.

Sounds like the radiator is not moving enough air. Is the fins plugged with dirt or bugs?

I had similar problem on my 2001 Insight. Had to replace some cooling system hoses eaten by rodents... Works like a champ again.
