Question about 2005 Lincoln Town Car
The cruise control and speedometer are controlled by a speed sensor located in the transmission. The speed sensor sends a signal to the ECM (engine control module) and the ECM sends the signal on to the speedometer in the instrument panel cluster.
If the ECM does not receive a signal from the transmission speed sensor, the cruise control and speedometer will not work.
Your mechanic will have to test and verify the speed sensor for correct function with a scan tool. If the "service engine light soon" lamp is illuminated, the ECM has identified the failure and will report a trouble code. Your mechanic will be able to read the code using the scan tool.
Good luck, let me know how it turns out.
