it could be that your transmission linkage cable between your cabin gear select/shifter and your transmission has become disconnected.

another cause of sticking in a gear would be a torque converter (basically, the "clutch" of an auto transmission) gone bad. first step to check on the transmission physical health is to check the tranny fluid. it should be a very bright, transparent red- free of smell. if it is crimson, dark, or opaque, and/or smells almost "fishy", change the fluid immediately, and dont expect the transmission to hold out for too much longer, if the fluid has that smell and/or is full of metallic specs.

if you have a lot of miles on the vehicle, you may want to have a shop change the automatic transmission fluid anyway, and check for any metal shavings in the drained fluid.

Not going forward backwards

Check transmission fluid, if low, fill to proper lvl. Fluid supposed to be reddish pink. If fluid looks good, its probably the transmisson control selonoid. If its dark and/or smells burned, and/or has dark specks throughout the fluid, a fluid change with filter might help, but you will need to replace your transmisson as burned smelling fluid or dark specks in your fluid indicates a severly worn transmission.

What would cause the automatic transmission on a1.8L mirage shift harshly from 2nd to 3nd and stay in drive all the time even when taking off from a stop until the ignition is turn off. Stsrt it back up...

Sounds like its in "limp" mode. The first step is to ensure that the fluid level is correct. There's a dip stick on the side of the transmission. Smell the fluid. If it smells like badly burned toast, its overheating. SOMETIMES a tranmission service will fix it, but since the Neutral light is flickering, I'd surmise that the transmission is about to give up, and is likely high mileage.

Have it assessed by some service shops. If the car is more than 10 years old, its probably cheaper to get another car than having the transmission replaced/rebuilt.

What would cause a P.T Cruiser to lose mph and not go anywhere

Sounds like transmission problems to me. Check your transmission fluid. If it is very low, you need to find out why. Probably a broken cooler line, (going from the transmission to the radiator) bad transmission output seal,(where the axles come out of the transmission) or front pump seal. (leaking between the engine block and the transmission housing) If it smells bad (like burned oil) and is dark brown, your transmission is burned up.

Transmission

It would appear that the transmission is worn out! The transmission fluid is supposed to be red in color with no bad odor about it. When it turns brown & has a burnt smell to it -it means the fluid was low at some point and it got real hot (with an fluid & filter change it could be saved).
When it turns black it means that the fluid now is usually past the saving point as is contaminated with lots of metal filings in it. If you change the fluid & the filter at this point you've got a 50 /50 shot at maybe getting it functioning again -at least for a short while.
I personally would try the fluid & filter change if just to get it running again (although it may have some issues) although the real answer is to start looking for a new vehicle (due to it's age) or have the transmission rebuilt if the car has no other major problems and you think it would be worth it! BTW a rebuilt transmission goes for about $1200 which is probably more than the car is worth.
