Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

'96 or '97 Jeep Cherokee won't even try to turn over on key turn

The light on dashboard showing the transmission in park lights up so i am assuming there is a bad switch that doesn't see that the transmission shifter (automatic) IS actually in park is bad (?); I have moved the steering wheel and shifter about every way I can think of while trying to start it and I have charged the battery (plus the other electrical systems work - like lights) so its not a dead battery. looks at a Haynes manual but don't even see a description of there being a switch in the transmission but that sure looks like what the dash would be trying to tell me; can anyone confirm and can i do anything besides having it towed???

i did think of that and tried it but no go; am i correctly interpreting the red dash light as 'put the transmission in park before I will connect the starter'?

yep, did that and the shifter is working fine; since it is parked on a hill in my driveway, it is now lower since it rolled when placed in neutral. I also tried starting while in every possible gear selection with the same result (no turn-over).

First, look under the car and watch the shift lever on the transmission. Does it move to the proper positions when you move the shifter?

Have you checked to see if there is power (12v) going to the small trigger wire on the starter? (with key turned to "start" position) If there is, it's possible that your starter is bad. If not, check the neutral safety switch and the ignition switch for power coming in and out with key again in start position. Before doing this, see if you can get the car onto level ground where it's safer to work.

ill pretend yes......
blown fuse. what else could cause so many things, to lose DC power.
>?
a fuse can be good, bad or intermittent , even corroded,
a tech would scratch head and pick the easiest fault to fix.
my guess, is
dashboard doesnt work means the guages , and idiot lamps are dead but the park lamps there (dimmable) do work.
so what fuse is that.? i say to self.....
I open the FSM. and look at the power cluster feed.
what do i see.?

i look in instruments page. (aka. cluster)
tells you how it works
then i jump wiring page 8w-40-2
i see what, Fuse 10. is it good? and fuse 17.
fuse 10 is key on,, and fuse 17, is hot full time.

thats it, if the cluster is dead, only fuses can kill it 100% dead
or it losts its main ground, which is unlikely but voltmeter proves
in 1min flat. (G201)

i picked right, the cluster dead, is the most simple
if Headlights are dead, its most simple (not in Canada with DRL)

bingo?

Sorry, but it is recommended to go to a service and make a diagnose. Seems that the automatic transmission has a fault.

On the side of your transmission will be a switch with several wires coming out of it. This is your reverse switch that turns on your reverse lights and most likely needs to be replaced

Guages when crazy. Now won't even try to start.

You likely have it repaired by now but it sounds like a classic case of oxidized battery or cable connection (sometimes mis-diagnosed as bad battery but cured with new (clean) battery)

4wh not working 91 jeep cherokee

There is a switch on top of the t-case that turns the light on when in 4wd. If the switch is bad, the jeep can be in 4wd and not show the light. Put the car in 4wd and make sharp circle turn, you can tell if the jeep is in 4wd.
