Question about 2002 Nissan Xterra
Ebensch: you may want to check your side marker lights as well as your tail lights. The 2000-2003 X-Terra's had a wire chaffing problem where the lights and the harness came together on one and/or both sides. This included the fog lamps. Check to insure that there is no problem with the wiring from the main harness going to the lighting in the front on both sides. If you find a problem, insulate the wires. You can buy a type of covering we call "SEWER PIPE" in the trade, which is actually a corrugated harness cover which is split in the center and will allow you to push the wires into the cover. Then you wrap a little tape a intervals of four inches and at the ends. This will unsure the wires will not get chaffed again. If you look at the factory harness, you will see samples of the "SEWER PIPE" that I am describing. It comes in various diameters and it is available at your local parts houses.
Fuse # 39 is the circuit which serves the lighting you are interested in. Check to see if it is blown. The instrument lights are on the same circuit. You also have a means of dimming the dash lights. Make sure that it has not been turned all the way down. It can make the lights in the dash go out. Try that and we'll see if you need any more assistance.
One other note: A very common problem I have run into where the dash lights and tail lights have gone out and the fuse has blown, is when a radio or other device has been installed and the installer has connected a ground to the wire which would normally turn an accessory light on when you turn your lights on.
