You need to expand more on your statement. What do you want to know? How to replace the starter/solenoid? or should you replace it. Depending on the symptoms that you are getting like is the starter dragging when you turn it over or is it making a whining noise?
If it is dragging sluggishly then possibly after you have excluded the battery, the bushes(2) could be worn and is easilly replaced along with the four commutator brushes. If it is whining that could be due to the solenoid not engaging or possibly the bendix mechanism. Attach + 12 volts to the thin pigtail lead that comes of from the solenoid and attach the negative lead to the body of the starter, you should get a healthy kick response and looking inside the halfmoon open section of the front of the starter assy you should see the engaging gear kick to the front. Certain Toyota Corolla models have 2 bolts that mates the starter to the gearbox and others have 3 bolts. I have also found that in some cases the earthing band that goes from the negative pole of the battery to the chassis of the car and the engine sometimes doesn't make a good contact either on the engine or body, check these out as well as that can lead to not enough current passing through for efficient cranking.

Chances are, you have a problem with the solenoid contacts inside the solenoid that is mounted on the starter assembly. It is a very common problem with a lot of the starters used on some Toyota products. Here is a very good site that explains the repair procedure, or you can just have the starter assembly replaced.

Where is the starter motor located in 2001 corolla

The Toyota Corolla E11 series's starting system consists of the battery, the starter motor, the starter solenoid and the electrical circuit connecting the components. The solenoid is mounted directly on the starter motor. The solenoid/starter motor assembly is installed on the upper part of the engine, next to the transmission bellhousing.

My 1993 toyota corolla can't start. prior to

Check the starting circuit. Start at the battery. Load test it (or have the auto parts store do it...most perform this test for free). If that is ok, check the wires to the starter solenoid. Look for loose connections, bolts, and/or corrosion. If you have power there, and it will not crank, It should be your starter or solenoid. It will be sold to you rebuilt or new and will come complete as one unit as the solenoid is integral to the starter. Make sure you do not have an alarm that is armed. I think that is a non issue on this particular year. My best guess is that the starter needs a replacement and that you should service the connections from thje battery to the starter and be back on the road.
