Could you tell me how to check gearbox fluid level on my 1998 bmw 523i automatic

There won't be a dipstick. You have to pull out the plug on the side of the transmission while the car is level and the transmission is at normal operating temperature. This is pretty tough for the average guy to do in his garage.
My daughter has a '97. We just take it to a shop and get the fluid replaced every 50k miles and so long as it does not leak, we don't worry about the level between changes.

Were is battery on a bmw 523i

To be completely honest, I know so few about the 2005 BMW's, but the battery location should be simple.

Typically they are located under the hood, usually by one one ofthe hood hinges. However, BMW has been know to put some of them in thetrunk (E46 325i). I have also seen some of them below the rear seat as well (Serie 3). Thebattery may have a cover over it, so it may be a little harder to see.

From my BMW catalog it shows it should be in the trunk, on the passenger's side. See this site: BMW Select

Hope helped with this (remember rated this help) Good luck.

BMW 523i 1999 model

your car is not suppose to idle at 500 rpm . 800 to 950 is the proper idle, unfortunately it is controlled by the computer. have you checked the idle speed control valve? also check the air flow meter
