Question about Chevrolet Suburban 1500

1 Answer

I changed a dead battery in my 1989 Chevy suburban and hooked up the cables on reverse poles. There was a pretty good arc so I did not attach the cable to the battery. Thinking it might be a faulty alternator I disconnected the power to the alternator and tried to connect the cable to the battery( again - cable to + battery )there was a small arc but I screwed on the cable to the battery. I went in to try to start the truck and there was smoke coming out of my stereo amp.I immediately disconnected the battery. I removed the battery and alternator and had them checked at auto zone, they checked O.K. Returning to the truck and reinstalling the battery and alternator I realized what I had done wrong (reverse battery connection) After connecting the battery correctly the truck would crank but not run. I removed the ignition module and had it checked, it passed. If I put fuel down the throttle body it fires till it runs out of fuel. Could I have blown the fuel pump? is there a fuse somewhere for the fuel pump? Or do you think there is some thing wrong in the electronics dealing with fuel supply? Thanks Mark

The battery is now poroperly conected. There is no arc when conecting the - cable

Every thing seems to have power. The ingnition has power ( will fire). Seems like the only thing wrong is no fuel.

First thing, is you want to put + on first. Then put on negative. If you have an acr, you very well blown an fusible link or fried the battery solenoid.

Check the relay on the firewall or fender for the fuel pump with an ohmmeter or multi-tester. You can also test the power to and from the relay with voltmeter or multi-tester to determine if there is a fusible link in the wiring that may have popped. Also double check any fuses.

Where is the starter relay located on 1989 chevy suburbani have no electrical power,my lights n radio come on but when try to start nothin happens just my battery gauge goes frm 13pwr to 0pwr..wat is...

Sounds like the battery cables are loose or corroded, or possibly the battery is no good. I would first disconnect the cables from the battery and clean the mating surfaces, reinstall the cables and make sure they are tight, If that doesnt do the trick then have the battery tested.

I installed a new chevy 350 in my 1980 firebird but I have to disconnect the battery or it will drain. When you hook up the cables you get a nice arc so I know that its drawing unwanted power all the time...

You will have to hook up battery and check to see if you see anything on like an interior light etc. If not start pulling fuses one at a time till you find what circuit is causing the draw on the battery. Then you have an idea of where to start looking.

    Battery arcs

you could have put in a shorted starter, or

you could have put the big wire to the ground bolt instead of the bolt at the starter solenoid.
