Check that the condenser fan is working when the ac is switched on
if it stops working at idle then the ac is shutting down from excessive pressure in the condenser from no air flow through the system

SOURCE: Ac bows hot air on high when on auto- only on the drivers side

the vent channels behind your dash is where the problem lies. It mostly depends on you and your skill. You are going to have to get help also because the dash lifts up and rolls back twards the driver and passanger seats. what you have to do is first check the cable or vacume assembly that operates the vent controlls, make sure nothing is disconnected or broken. If all the cables are in place and move correctly and the vacume hoses have all been pulled off and checked for crackes wholes and functionallitgy. then start checking the seals and vents that route the air flow. find the one that goes to the driver side make it move with your hands then see where the movement comes from also check the seals if they are broken or have come off and are just not allowing air to be channeled to that location. Also make sure that if the control pannel in the dash board is good. Usually if its electric and bad there is a specific smell you will get from burnt electrical boards or components.

Taking a dash off is not the easiest work in the world, and you have to remember wheere every single screw, bolt, nut and clip goes. If you forget one single thing the dash could ratle squeak or do something that will totaly drive You INSANE for the rest of your life. I am not trying to say don't do it, I love DIY'ers but think about if your ready for this. Is your skill where it needs to be and do you have the tools needed for this task. Also, I would buy a Chilton, it will have ilistrated pictures and special notes. I hate saying this also but read the entire procedure first before starting I once took the entire dash off of a chevy blazer to replace the heater core just to find out I had to cut a molded plasitc shield under the hood. Had to put the entire dash back together without replacing the heater core because I didn't have a cutting device for the plastic shield.

Hope this helps

SOURCE: air conditioning

It sounds like you over charged the system, the low side should be 40psi to 50psi with the A/C on high and the high pressure side should read 150psi to 200psi. Anything different, you need to get the system service and try not to use your A/C to prevent the compressor from any damages. Good luck and hope this helps.

SOURCE: my ac wont get cool.......it blows hot air and(caddy seville 95)

Below is a guide to troubleshoot and check system function. This can be done by most folks.

Look at the front of the ac compressor and have someone turn on the ac from inside the car. The front of the pulley(clutch) will spin when turned on.

If it does not spin, the low pressure switch (LPS) is not satisfied. Meaning there is not enough freon in the system to operate the system. Means low freon capicity because of a leak.

The LPS can be jumpered to cause the compressor to run (clutch to engaged) which will draw the freon in the system.

The LPS is usually a two wire sensor on the suction of the compressor. (between evaporator and compressor) Unplug the sensor and install a jumper, this will engage the clutch. Connect a new can of freon
and fill to system capacity.

The capacity of the ac system will be on a label under the hood, do not overfill. Probably about 2 lbs. Local parts stores (Auto Zone and Advance) will have freon with stop leak. This may help the leak. They also make a freon with a UV dye. I always add a single can with dye so that if stop leak does not work I can find the leak in the future.

The system should be filled until suction pressure is about 30 to 38 psi..

Remember the flow for the a/c system is :
1. From the compressor a high pressure (HP) gas goes to the condenser in front of the radiator.
2. From the condenser a HP liquid goes to an expansion device (orifice tube or expansion valve)
3. From expansion device the low pressure gas enters the firewall to the evaporator.
4. From evaporator the low pressure liquid/gas mixture goes through the dryer2_bing.gif back to the compressor suction.

Car gets hot when Idle

You might check your cooling fan at the radiator; it may not be running. If it's not, track it down (fuse or thermal switch) and fix it!

2003 kia rio burns out rad fan fuse when turned on

Try unplugging the air conditioner compressor under the hood. There should be a plug near to its pulley. With the compressor unplugged, try turning the fan switch to AC again & see if it still blows the fuse. If it does, there's a problem somewhere in the wiring between the switch and the compressor. If not, the problem is in the compressor's pulley clutch.

Does your A/C have a full charge of 134A refrigerant in it?
Sounds like it's low on charge.
USE ONLY APPROVED REFRIGERANT not those cheap replacements for 134A.
If the refrigerant container shows an explosive warning on it DO NOT USE IT.Those can be butane or propane mixes and if you have an car accident you may not want to be sprayed with those in your car interior if the A/C system is damaged.

The noise is probably the compressor. Maybe the belt could be loose or worn. You may be low on freon. Start with the easy one, check the belt, then freon. Good luck!

A local garage mechanic says the clutch has stopped working on ac that is why it blows hot air instead of cool says it will cost $900. to fix cause I have to buy the whole ac unit does this sound correct?...

have you tried charging the ac system? most ac compressors have a pressure switch that will not allow the relay to engage the clutch if the coolant pressure is low. $15 can of r134a and maybe a $20 Haynes manual is well worth the price difference, eh?
