Fit them to the crank shaft, that gives you the rough positions. Given you have changed the valves in order and properly sprung you can set the bottom pully to the top(12 0'clock) position, noting which piston is at the top of its stroke, or vary it slightly so its at stroke, Check your head against the block and turn the cam so the inlet valve for that chamber is open. do the same with the next piston in your firing sequence, turning the camshaft accordingly, to ensure the inlet valve opens fully. Fit the gasket and tighten the nuts down lightly, set up the timingmarks by eye,fit the belt and by turning the bottom pully you should find there is no resistance between the piston heads and the valve seats, thats why you don't tighten the head down as not to damage the valves if not firing in line. You should be ok though, tighten the head down slowly checking the pistons and valve contact is not an issue, turning the engine with the socket a full revolution with every turn of the bolts. Once fully tightned, before torquing, turn the engine FULLY to ensure there is NO piston/valve contact, then fit all ancillaries, set timing using a standard strobe and the distributer. Hope this helps, it should do, Regards Dave

IF the belt slips it could cause the pistons to contact the valves and this causes severe damage.

How do you change a timing belt on a renault scenic 1.8 year of car 2002

do not attempt this yourself its very difficult to do as special tools are need which cost over 100 euros ,these tools lock crank ,locate TDC and hold cams into position ,the gearwheels do not have keyways so using convential methods will result in damaged valves when you attempt to undo the crankshaft pulley ,trust me as i have done many and without the right tools ?? It can be done if the cams are slackened off first so all the valves are closed then a long bar and socket on the bottom pulley and starter motor used to undo the bottom pulley ,but without the right tool to lock crank then you cannot tighten the bolt enough 120lbs or when you drive it the gearwheel turns and bang go the valves and a piston or two ,you need the special tool to lock the ring gear on the flywheel .

WHEN TO CHANGE TIMING BELT ON RENAULT SCENIC GRAND DCI MODEL & DO THE PETROL MODELS HAVE TIMING BELTS OR A TIMING CHAIN?

The Renault schedule for timing belts on the Scenic is 72,000 miles or 5 years. This applies to both the petrol and DCI models as both have timing belts not chains.

However, please be aware that it is common knowledge in the trade not to let the interval go past 40,000 miles because these engines are renowned for snapping belts at any time after 40k resulting in serious engine damage.

Haynes (who are renowned for their service manuals on many models) recommend a maximum interval of 36,000 miles between belts on this model which is exactly half that of what Renault say!

This information from Haynes is backed up by experience and reports from the trade on the common and unfortunate experiences of customers experiencing belt breakage at 45 k and below.

Hope this helps. Please do leave a vote for the solution. Thanks.

I have a Renault Megane 1.4 2000 model the timing belt has not snapped but the teeth on the belt have broken away which in turn will not allow the timing belt to rotate. Would this be just as bad as the...

Yes it is as bad as the belt snapping, if your lucky there will be cutaways in the pistons so the valves may not have touched, its a bit tricky to check until you replace the belt and can check valve clearances and cylnder compressions,
or remove the head and check.
If you replace the belt it is often recommented to replace any bearings and pulleys as well, as a tight bearing may be the initial cause.

Had a cambelt break on a 2003 renault scenic 1.6 16v, replaced valves and head gasket, just need to fit timing belt but having trouble with the cam timing, crank shaft locking tool is fitted...

Its because your pistons on 1&4 are up top that is why your bent valves got bent you are doing exactly the same thing so turn the crank back 15degrees position your cam and reset your crank,it seems to me you may be out of your depth lets hope not or it may be expensive
