Question about 1987 Mercury Cougar

I have a leak somewhere in the tranny line on my 88 mercury cougar. how do I check for certain? every morning there is a puddle of tranny fluid underneath the car. It still has fluid in it and shifts but usually once a week it hesitates before shifting gears.

To make this as simple as possible, the trans lines go from trans to radiator back to trans. The question is where is puddle? If near radiator, then radiator must be going bad or you have a crack in radiator where trans fluid circulates. If in front of trans then front seal in trans is bad, if in middle then pan gasket bad, if in rear the rear seal bad. Hope this helps.

You need to get under there and look to see where it's dripping form. clean the area off with a rag and look carefully. Also...make sure the unit is full (add fluid) if you fail to keep it full you will be looking at a blown unit instead of a leak!

I have a 99 Mercury Cougar 2.5 v6. I have only reverse. No forward gears. It's an automatic transmission

check the fluid condition/ex. full level/rose pink/red color is good if it's brown it's burning this could be from slipping/ improper cooling from hot running engine(the tranny lines go through the radiator)broken vacuum line/pressure loss dirty electrical connectors/blown switches inside the tranny/or the tranny is completely shot==this all depends on what you find if your engine has been running rough for a while your loosing vacuum inches and proper voltage and this will contribute to ruining a transmission in a short time also high heat /hot running engine == old transmission===I'm fried out === junk yard transmission=$$and a lot of work / rebuilt transmission===$$$$$ and other repairs as needed to not burn the new one out in 6 months or less good luck

Does a 1999 Mercury Sable have a vacuum modulator?

it has to be going somewhere , check your radiator (why) because the radiator cools the tranny in lower radiator, when you park your car put down cardboard and look at it in the morning

I need a diagram for an 88 mercury cougar v-8 for vacum lines

Have you looked around the engine compartment? Many vehicles have a sticker with the vacuum diagram on it somewhere there (usually on top of the radiator mounting frame, but sometimes on a fender well).

A circle with a explanation point on the inside start blinking then the next day it start leaking transmission fluid real bad

you have a blown front seal in the tranny refill with fluid and drive a short distance and monitor the light and check under car for puddle if no puddle and no light then i would service the tranny (replace filter fluid and gasket cheap fix ) if still leaking and light still on you can have it repaired or replaced

Check engine light on, failed smog due to leak in tranny 98 sable

Your modulator valve on the outside rear of the tranny may be leaking tranny fluid into the vacuum line and it it is being burnt and exhausted by the engine. The valve has a thin diaphram within and over a period of time it can leak the fluid into the line. This must be replaced before it becomes a situation where the tranny will not shift out of low gear. Thank you, Dana
