Question about 1993 Mazda MX-3
My mazda mx3 v6 (1993) stopped shifting correctly. First it was difficult to shift into 5th. Then, on the entrance to the highway, late night, I'm tired, it refused to shift into anything! I'm frantic... it was running in neutral... finally got it into 3rd, then 5th, and got nearly home. Once off the highway, it was shifting into 1, 3, 5 but not 2, 4, or reverse... all the up gears, none of the down (direction of shift handle) gears.
It's been burning oil. It's had a history recently of the check engine light coming on upon start if the engine oil is low (a good indicator!). If the oil is low I noticed it was hard to shift into 5th. I checked oil in the morning. It needed it badly. Put in 2 quarts. Started it up. Wasn't shifting. Waited a couple min for oil to circulate. And it started shifting, but still a little roughly.
It went to my mechanic, who said there's no relation between engine oil and shifting. He could find nothing wrong, even after warming up. Anyone have an answer???
I don't want to get into trouble on the highway again!

sounds like the clutch is going to need replacement and while there you should change the slave cylinder too

I have a rubbing/burning smell in my 2002 Mazda Millenia. I don't know if I should get rid of it or keep it. It has 100,000 miles and I drive 600miles a week to work.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!
Since it's a 2004 I doubt that the gearbox is faulty, it's too early for it to get be worn out so you can leave the gearbox issue. I do suspect that you have a faulty clutch lining. If they are worn out this issues occur. I strongly suggest that you replace the clutch lining, release bearing and pressure plate. Once replaced you'll be good.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

suggest that you check your transmission fluid post haste please. you may only need to add transmission fluid to your car. also,if you have to add the fluid, where did your fluid leak? check for leaks under your car when parked. you may need transmission fluid and filter change, suggest that you do this with new filter and add lucas transmission treatment to the fluid change also. you'll need to purchase this yourself, unless you have a mechanic in the family that can do it for you.if not i suggest you find a mechanic you trust, then tell him,or,her to add this to your tranny fluid change. also suggest while the mechanics there at the transmission to check the modulator valve on the transmission, and the vacum line that operates it. just a hint. thanks for choosing fixya.com
