I was reversing my 1994 toyota hilux went to shift from reverse to first and now stuck in neutral but jammed in gear don't know what gear if you let clutch out it stalls im guessing its in a top gear

Remove the 4 bolts holding the gear pivot turret onto the top of the box and using a screw driver select neutral gear ( when all the selector rails line up as one slot)
If it is still in gear when you let the clutch out, a selector fork has become loose on the rail or broken and that means box out for repair

are you sure it is first gear it is making when in 1. In park does the car lock up if you try to push it with the handbrake off. If not your problem is adjustment of the cable i.e. although the lever is in reverse the gearbox isn't.

i have a 2001 escape xlt this happened to me and it was the clip on the transmission linkage that was broken...pretty cheap to fix

Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.

Either the shift knob or the actuator rod under the shift knob has worn out.
Remove the shift knob and pull the actuator rod (plastic) out of the shift lever and inspect it for wear or damage. If the rod is not worn or damaged, replace the shift knob and you will be good to go.

This is Ron out of Vero Beach Florida. I have been doing trannys for years. The problem you described is caused (more than likely) by a seized clutch pack. Depending on the trans, and your car should be RWD with a 700r4 tranny, there are several sets of clutch packs and at least one band. Automatic transmissions rely on fluid pressure to "engage" the correct set of clutch discs, at the right time , to engage and change gears. I have seen in the past, where a customer parks his car for the evening and the next morning, no move. What happened?? More than likely, a clutch pack was on it\'s way out but cause the car was hot the plates were free, but after cooling, they can weld themselves together and actually "lock-up". In the morning you know the end result. Your tip on "moves in Nuetral" is the give away. Ron

2003 dodge caravan will not reverse

NO REVERSE ON TRANSMISSION

It can be issue with gears or problem with transmission and needs to be rebuilt. Also get the tranny fluid checked. If it's low, then such problems occurs.

The shifter needs to be inspected. If The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

There are many other possibilities.
