Question about 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Truck

Oil Pressure gauge drops to 0 and then goes back up

I just had my oil pump, sensor, and screen replaced. Lately when I stop at a red light, the oil pressure gauge drop to ''o''. When the light turns green, it goes back up to where it should be. It doesnt do this everyday or all time but it does do it usually the 1x at the same light. Its real odd, any ideas?

I was told that I may need to purchase a crate motor cause the bearings are shot. Does this sound right and if so, where would I get one?

Let me ask is a crate motor the same as just replacing/rebuilding the motor?

You may have a defective oil sender or oil pump or the wire is loose. Why did you replace the sender and pump. If this was going on before this you couple have an engine issue. Take it in before it destroys the engine. Chrysler/Dodge has has lots of issues with oiling problems.

I thought so. Do a search on Chrysler engine sludge issues. Mostly on the 2.7 and 3.4 engines. You will see that their are lawsuits ana a s**tload of complaints. Sorry to hear this. My neighbor just went thru this also

By the way what I would do is trade the car in if the light is off. The next person will get a used car warrenty so he can get it fixed.

Yes. They have to put the same engine in that came out. Note that one off the main reasons the engines have sludge issues is because lack of oil services. Even at 3000 mile service intervals alot of engines are failing. Never do a engine flush on these. if you have engine slugde it can break off a chunk and clog a passage. Its best to just do more oil services like every 1500 to 2000 miles. Real bummer, huh

I know you have the 5.9. Do a search on dodge 5.9 engine sludge. its out there. sorry

Oil Pressure Drops

Did the mechanic drive the truck with a mechanical gauge to check the pressure ? The engine bearings or oil pump could be worn enough to allow pressure to drop at idle after it warms up.

96 chevy cheynne 5.7 vortechas about 40to50 pounds oil pressure when first sart in morning and when it gets to temp. it drops to 20to25pnds and at a stop it goes to 0 and gauge light comes on until i give...

Well it could be the sending unit for the gauge.
But odds are the oil pump or engine bearings are worn out.
As the engine warms up, the metal spaces expand and the oil gets thinner. The oil pressure drops some under normal conditions, but not more than 10 or 15psi. Normal idle pressure with the engine warmed up is probably 25psi.
You could check oil pressure with a mechanical gauge to make sure its not the sending unit.
Once the oil pressure starts staying below 20psi for long periods you'll start hearing noises.

Oil pressure drop with engine getting hot

You'll want to remove the electrical oil pressure gauge and check the oil pressure with a manual gauge to verify low oil pressure. If the oil pressure tests good with a manual gauge, then you either have a faulty oil pressure sender, or gauge in the dash (I rarely see faulty gauges). If the pressure is still low, suspect worn crankshaft bearings. There is also a possiblity that the screen to the oil pump is clogged. This can be visually checked by removing the oil pan and cleaned.

After about 2 hrs of driving my oil guage on my 2003 sierra goes down to almost 0. I stop and shut the truck off for about 5 min. and the guaga goes back to normal for about 1 hour then the same problem...

A failing oil pressure sensor may be to blame, need to verify the pressure is actually falling to zero with a mechanical gauge. If the pressure on the mechanical gauge does not drop to zero under the same conditions then suspect the pressure sensor. If it is then
I would suspect the oil pump pick up screen is becoming clogged with debris. As mileage accumulates sludge can accumulate in the engine, as bits of it come loose they settle in the oil pan. Extended driving allows it to collect in the pick up screen until it is restricted, upon shutting the engine down the particles drift back to the bottom of the pan. There is also a more remote possiblilty of the bypass valve in the oil pump itself being the culprit, but I think the chance is fairly remote.
Good hunting

Change the oil! The 318Cu in V8 (5.2 liter) engine has a problem with sludge build up on the oil pump pickup tube screen. This engine requires oil changes at or before 3500 miles with a high detergent oil.
