Why will my new sparkplugs not fire? After going through a puddle and rain and having my car stall out...it would not start. We changed out the sparkplugs and plug covers and it will not turn over.

This is an engine without a distributor. Is it a crankshaft position sensor? Solenoid? Any ideas?

I don't know I don't know. I can't start it to get it to a place with a diagnostic machine. it is an old car..a 91...wouldn't even begin to know about codes. I am not automotively inclined and can't afford to just take it to a shop. I am relying on a friend who is just troubleshooting but really doesn't know why it won't start. I also can't afford to just replace part after part after part. Just looking for input and ideas, thanks so much for yours!

Unfortunately my car has a check engine light that has stayed on for two years since I got it. And if has been over a week since it went through the puddle. I don't think anything is still wet. He only gets a chance to work on it sporadically. Thanks for all your comments though. Guess it will just have to be am elimination process.

Check the ignition system the relays fuses the coil pack they may be still wet or shorted but before you do that -your car is pre 96 so you dont have and obdll port for a code reader their is a dianostic port bad if you jump you will get a flashing check engine light which you count 1 flash short pause 2 more flashes is a 12 code the following link will assist you and your friend in getting your car started

Don't drive thru puddles? Water gets on electrical components causing temporary stall state.

Every so often or especially when it rains heavy my car looses power while driving and cuts out when i loose speed. it will start again straight away but will cut out again instantly blowing a lot of smoke...

unsure if your engine model is same as ours here, but rain or heavy dampness usually shows up leakage in sparkplug wires and insulators. They give this exact problem.this model here has long extended rubber/plastic insulators that run through the valve cover to the sparkplugs. If the sparkplugs havent been replaced for a while(some of these have platimun or iridium plugs that should run 60-100,000km).the current needed to fire them increases.it will always take the easiest pathway to earth, and often it is through the side of these long insulators.Itg will be hard to see as the hole is only pin sized but will have a small build up of black carbon around the hole.'Also when the fault is evident, you should be able to lift the bonnet and hear little crack sounds as they leak and the engine will misfire when this occur.Hence the loss of power, the plugs wont be firing each time that they leak.
A new set of sparplugs and leads should fix this.If it is the direct fire model that has an individual coil over each sparkplug, you can purchase the insulators separately. The coils should be fine or they would fault in any weather.Hope this helps you

When it rains my entire truck shakes and it sounds like something is slamming the fire wall

Gotta be something to do with your tires. Maybe jack it up and see if one is loose.

1989 Dodge Omni Stalls out

A sparkplug wire may have been loosesed or disconnected or damaged.
If you can't find it then wait until late evening when it's dark.

Open hood and start the car. You will see the sparks from the damaged/loose sparkplug cable. Don't touch it while ignition is ON. It will shock you!

If you "disconnected" any sparkplug wires when you replaced the oil pump, then they were not put back in the proper firing order.

Hope this helps!

97 vw jetta

pop off the distributer cap and dry it out well. Put it back on and it should work. This happened to my 97 jetta too...also if I go through large puddles at a quick speed this may happen too. There isn't good electrical contact with the moisture.

Motor stalls when driving then starts and stalls right away.

Replace the distributor's magnetic pickup located inside the distributor surrounding the distributor shaft, the only other thing thankfully on this ignition system if memory serves me on the f 150 straight six 300 cu inch is the dura spark ignition control box, of course do the obvious tune up parts replacement dist.cap rotor, plug , sparkplugs before spending the $40.00 - $50.00 bucks on the dist.. pick up, you may have a weak a fuel pump check for adequate fuel pressure at carb 7 - 10 lbs.
