Question about 2000 Volkswagen Golf
I also have this problem on my mk4 1.6se (S reg). It only happens once every few times, not all the time. The screech last 1 or 2 seconds and then goes, it can't be the belt as I have had this recently changed. When i had the car serviced by the local garage the man seemed to think it may be somehting to do with the starter motor.
Sounds like the solenoid in the starter motor sticking in for a second, best to get it sorted cos each time it does it it could be damaging the flywheel, also if it sticks in perminant it could burn the starter out or worst case cause a fire. all the best
