SOURCE: 1998 audi a4 quatro - where is the coolant part in

CTS is at the back of the engine, behind and below the passenger side cylinder head, beneath the intake pipe going from the mass airflow sensor to the throttle body. It's either black or blue in your car, has four wires coming off the connector plugged into the top of it, and has a retaining clip that holds it as well. Get a new clip when you buy the sensor - they're plastic and break easily.

SOURCE: Code P0118 on Audi A4 - Related to Ignition Coil Problem?

Hi, the sensor on the engine (right at the rear end of the cylinder head) has two separate outputs. One drives the temperature gauge and the other provides data for the engine control unit. The output for the engine control unit is almost certainly faulty and the sensor will need to be replaced. It isn't an expensive item and's not time consuming to replace (1/2 hr) - so you could ask Audi to do it for you when they replace the ignition coils.
Hope that helps Matt..

SOURCE: 2005 Audi A4 1.8 Fuel Pump problem?

I had an Audi A4, 10 years older than yours mind you, but it would start then stop, sometimes 10 times but would eventually go. I ran a little WD40 in the key barrel and put the key in and out a couple of dozen times. Wiping it with a cloth each time, lots of dirt came off. My theory and it's only mine, is that the wear on the key left dirty metal deposits inside which stopped the chip in the key being recognised. I believe they had a security chip inside the key.
Anyway after 6 months of this nuisance it never happened again after that. Fixed my problem and a lot of frustration. Maybe help you too.

are you meaning the water or the air. if water says 40c and ecu say 26c.( or without engine running.) the engine sensor needs changing. if out side temp is 10c and air sensor for intake is 26-96 then change it.

The orange engine warning light is lit and the engine surges between 4,000 and 5,000 rpm

The first step is to delete the fault code:
Disconnect + wire on the battery for one hour. Turn ignition ON but do not start the engine. Leave it on so the throttle resets automatically. Turn ignition OFF and then start the engine as you normally do. Go for a 15 minutes drive, Audi reccomends to not let the engine idle, go for a normal drive so the ECU reads the values from all sensors again and remaps the ignition and fuel timing. If after all this the Engine Service light stays ON the engine needs to be diagnosed by an Audi workshop as it could be a lot of things, from a faulty coil pack, to an oxygen sensor or maybe a coolant/air temp sensor...

Temp gauge off charts

Are you mistaking the engine temp sensor for the engine temp sending unit? The temp sensor is for the fuel injection system and the temp sending unit is for the gauge. If you asked for a sensor thats what they sold you. You need to ask for a sending unit.

A4 Starts ok then engine fades out? 1996 model

Try replacing the engine temp sensor. Temp sensor is telling ECU the engine is hot when its is actually cold. After the 6th attempt there is enough fuel in the cylinders to create a ritch mixture, then it goes.
