Question about 2002 Ford F250 Super Duty SuperCab

Ignition actuator I am having issues with my ignition actuator rod. I can turn the key to the starting position but the truck doesn't start. Is there a way to bypass the actuator and just put in a toggle switch?

There is a pin in the rod that normally breaks, if you unbolt the ignition switch from the bottom of the column you will be able manually move the switch,

The switch that the ignition actuator rod pushes on can be adjusted upward. Make sure the steering column itself isn't damaged though you can damage the switch if the column is worn out and you adjust it upward

Yea, you'll still need your key to unlock the steering wheel. Just get a properly rated DPDT (double pole double throw) switch that is "on-off-on" from radio shack or somewhere similar, as we'll as a momentary switch/push button to actuate the solenoid. Make one position on the DPDT your accessory position and the other your run position. Make sure it's in the run position when you go to start it. Again, you will need the key to unlock the column and possibly your shifter. Look up diagrams to figure out which wires you will need to have on the switch. It'll take a little engineering on your part, but if you know your wires, you can do it. Best of luck!

Remove and replacement of key lock cylinder


Hello,

The switch on Your Jimmy is mounted atop the steering column assembly, hiding under the dashboard. You must lower the column to reach it. If you have the replacement ignition switch with You or want to remove it first to make sure you are buying the correct one, follow these steps to remove and install it.
  1. Set the ignition key to the off position.
  2. Detach the negative battery cable using a wrench.
  3. Remove the steering wheel column lower trim panel using a Phillips screwdriver.
  4. Detach the steering column from the under dashboard frame using a wrench or ratchet and socket. Support the steering column to keep it from falling.
  5. Locate the ignition switch on top of the steering column. The switch is a small rectangular box connected to the lock cylinder---where you insert the ignition key---through an actuating rod.
  6. Unfasten the two ignition-switch mounting bolts using a wrench or ratchet and socket.
  7. Slide the ignition switch off the actuating rod and remove it from the steering column.
    Installing the Switch
  8. Make sure the new ignition switch is in the off position. Some aftermarket switches will have a pin on the switch slider, close to the base of the switch, to lock it in the off position to ensure proper installment. Verify whether your new switch has this pin.
  9. Slide the new ignition switch into the actuating rod, making sure not to push the slider inside the switch.
  10. Set the new ignition switch in place on top of the steering column, and start the two mounting bolts by hand. Then tighten the mounting bolts using the wrench or ratchet and socket.
  11. Remove the pin (if the new switch came equipped with it) from the switch slider by hand or with pair of needle-nosed pliers.
  12. Insert the key into the ignition lock cylinder; turn the key to make sure the rod is actuating the new ignition switch. Then turn the key back to the off position.
  13. Set the steering column in position against the dashboard frame, and start the mounting bolts by hand. Then tighten the mounting bolts using the wrench or ratchet and socket.
  14. Install the steering wheel column lower trim panel using the Phillips screwdriver.
  15. Attach the negative battery cable using the wrench.

The actuator rod has a spring and block the returns the actuator to its normal position. Sounds like one of the three parts are broke. If this is a tilt steering column there is a two piece actuator rod. I am in the process of replacing the upper actuator rod, the pin that connects it to the lower actuator broke off. Never had any ignition problems, one day it just won't turn off due to broken actuator rod. Hope this helps you.

How do i remove key lock cylinder on steering column to replace with new one?


Turn ignition key/lock cylinder to the ON position. Insert a thin screwdriver into the slot adjacent to the switch attaching screw boss (right-hand slot). Depress the spring latch located at the bottom of the slot to release the key/lock cylinder. Remove the cylinder.

Removal & Installation

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the steering column shroud and lower the steering column.
3. Detach the ignition switch electrical hardness connector.
4. Remove 2 nuts retaining the ignition switch to the steering column housing.
5. Lift the ignition switch upward to disengage the actuator rod from the switch and remove the switch.


To install:

> When installing the ignition switch, both the locking mechanism at the top of the column and the switch itself must be in the LOCK position for correct adjustment. To hold the mechanical parts of the column in the LOCK position, move the shift lever into PARK (with automatic transmissions) or REVERSE (with manual transmissions), turn the key to the LOCK position, and remove the key. New replacement switches, when received, are pinned in the LOCK position by a metal shipping pin inserted in a locking hole on the side of the switch.


6. Engage the actuator rod in the ignition switch.
7. Place the ignition switch on the steering column housing and loosely install 2 retaining nuts.
8. Move the switch up or down along the column to locate the mid-position of the actuator rod lash, then tighten the retaining nuts to 47-64 inch. Lbs. (5-7 Nm).
9. Raise the steering column into position at instrument panel. Install steering column shroud.
10. Connect the negative battery cable.
11. Remove the locking pin, connect the battery cable, and verified that the engine will only crank in PARK and NEUTRAL. Also check to make certain the start circuit cannot be actuated in the DRIVE and REVERSE positions.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Remove steering column shroud and lower the steering column.
  3. Disconnect the switch wiring at the multiple plug.
  4. Remove the two nuts that retain the switch to the steering column.
  5. Lift the switch vertically upward to disengage the actuator rod from the switch and remove switch.
  6. When installing the ignition switch, both the locking mechanism at the top of the column and the switch itself must be in LOCK position for correct adjustment.
To hold the mechanical parts of the column in LOCK position, move the shift lever into PARK (with automatic transmissions) or REVERSE (with manual transmissions), turn the key to LOCK position, and remove the key. New replacement switches, when received, are already pinned in LOCK position by a metal shipping pin inserted in a locking hole on the side of the switch.

The lock rod is broken inside the column.You have to disassemble it to replace the lock rod actuator.

I lost my keys to my 96 dodge dakota so i tried to forcefully use a screwdriver to start it resulting in a busted ignition i can get it to turn to the point of starting but the starter isnt turning over...


you will have to take the steering wheel off and the steering collum apart to find the rod that actuates the real ignition switch..the thing you stick your key in..is not really the ignition switch....its just a key tumbler..and it would be best that a professional replace the key tumbler..because it is difficult to drill out..i know this isnt what you wanted to hear..but i hope it helps
