I don't own a BMW, but it sounds to me like a bulb indicator light. It might be telling you that you have a bulb burned out around the car. Have someone step on the brakes and check that both lights work, then turn on the hazards and check that all lights flash, then turn on the parking lights with the hazards off and see that all lights are on.

What does the yellow cog light on the dash of my 1999 BMW Z3 mean?

The car is now quite old, and the yellow gear ("cog") light indicates that the hydraulic pressure in the transmission is incorrect. Check fluid level and, if the fluid is murky or off-color, have the transmission serviced and the filter replaced.

CIRCLE SYMBOL with dashes around the outside what does this mean?

Brake pads

Have the brake pads checked
immediately.
dc39396.jpg For your own safety: use only
brake pads that BMW has
released for your particular vehicle
model. BMW cannot evaluate nonapproved
brake pads to determine if
they are suitable for use, and therefore
cannot ensure the operating safety of
the vehicle if they are installed.<

Dasboard light symbol

It's your brake wear indicator light coming on. It means your brake pads are about 3/32" or less left on your pads. It's time to replace them.
