Fuel delivery problem: If the engine is not getting enough fuel, it will not start. This can be caused by a clogged fuel filter, a faulty fuel pump, or a malfunctioning fuel injector.
Ignition problem: The engine needs a spark in order to start. If there is a problem with the ignition system, such as a faulty spark plug or ignition coil, the engine may not start.
Engine timing: If the engine's timing belt or chain is damaged or has jumped a tooth, the engine may not start.
Engine compression: If the engine's compression is low, it may not start. This can be caused by a blown head gasket, worn piston rings, or damaged valves.
Engine control module (ECM): If the engine control module is not functioning properly, it may prevent the engine from starting.
Most vehicles cogs usually have an arrow on them which points to a marker on the body behind the cog. all cogs must be correctly alligned before starting the engine.
The flooding issue while not a an everyday type issue it is common for Rotary engines, typically when the car is first started and then shut off right away. The owner manual does describe the process to recover from this problem.
Starting a Flooded Engine-
If the engine fails to start, it may be flooded (excessive fuel in the engine).
Follow this procedure:
1. Depress the accelerator all the way and hold it there. - (This acts as a cut-off switch for the fuel pump, thus keeping it from pushing fuel into the system)
2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position and hold it there-for up to 10 seconds. If the engine starts, release the key and accelerator immediately because the engine will suddenly rev up.
3. If the engine fails to start, crank it without using the accelerator-for up to 10 seconds.
Alt. method: There's another way to do it pulling the the Fuel Pump Fuse, then
with fuse out try starting the engine 3-4 times about 7 sec. each time
-do not pump the gas pedal- this should clean out the excess fuel.
Then
re-install the fuel pump fuse and try starting the engine 3-4 times (this time you may be able to start it in the 1st or 2dn try) about 7 sec. each time
-do not pump the gas pedal- you should be able to hear the engine start very rough, at this time you can give it some gas to get it going and you will probably have a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust which is normal. Run it at about 2000 rpm until it clears out.
Now there are something to also know that is not mentioned in the manual. Most likely by the time you figure your engine is flooded you will have already tried to start the engine a dozen times and your battery will most likely be somewhat spent. This in turn will leave you with hardly any power to turn the engine for 10 sec. at a time as described in the above procedure. You will need to recharge your battery in order to do all the necessary steps successfully.
Hello! Is the engine an RB or a VE30DE? The code is stamped on the block...From my experience the 1994 Cefiro only came with a straight 6 rather than a V-6...Can you specifically identify the engine? Also does it have two timing chains; An upper and a lower? Thanks .....Guru...Saailer
You will need a timing light for Hi energy ignition as well as standard socket set or wrenches. 1. get the engine up to operating temp. 2 shut off engine connect the timing light to the number one[1] spark plug wire at the spark plug end connect battery connectors. 3 start engine and note location of pointer on the mark tab on the timing cover. 4 shut off engine loosen the hold down clamp on the distributor turn the bolt no more than one full turn[snug is better than loose here] then note the position of the dist. cap. Move the dist. to make sure it moves freely replace back to the starting position and remove and plug the vaccum line to the dist. 5 start engine and set timing to the desired spec. 6 shut off engine tighten dist. clamp bolt 7 start engine check timing one more time to see if still there at desired setting. 8 shut off engine dis-connect all tools and light
try starting fluid next time if it start then you have a fuel problem your not getting enough fuel weak fuel pump try a tun up first when you do tun up change your fuel filter also.
