It could be your lifter after so many miles the lifters may loosen causing a tapping sound. If U have any skills to remove the head cover the lifters are on top and U could tighten back down to spec.

Hope this helps

SOUNDS LIKE A LASH ADJUSTER. USUALLY CAUSED BY LACK OF MAINTENANCE OR USING AFTERMARKET OIL FILTER. USE MOTORCRAFT FL820 OIL FILTER. AFTERMARKET OILFILTERS DETERIORATE AND PLUG OIL GALLEY IS HEAD AND ALSO THAY DON'T HAVE AN ANTI DRAIN BACK DIAPHRAM. MAY NEED A FEW LASH ADJUSTERS INSTALLED IN RIGHT BANK.

97 expedition 5.4 doesnt idle very good

Surging idle is usually caused by vacuum leaks. Ford 5.4L engines are notorious for the PCV hose elbow leaking back behind the throttle body.

The PCV tube goes from the right (passenger) side valve cover and loops around behind the valve body. Inspect this hose on BOTH ends.

01 ford expedition front end noise

i suspect it's the bushings for the front stabilizer bar. Need silicone grease or replacing. This assumes 4x2, not 4x4. #3 is the bushing.
Could also be upper arm with ball joint. These are lubed for life, not greaseable. But you could spray WD40 to see if it stops temporarily. see # 1 in 2nd illustration.

does the whinning noise decrease or go away when u decelarate? this is the key to a proper diagnosis. if it does, then your problem eather ring & pinion gears or related bearings (these are all in the center part of the diff.) if it does not change, the problem is in the wheel bearings, or rough tread on the tires. the former is expensive(4 or 5 hundred), the latter is not so bad(a hundred or so). u could try raising it up & supporting it under axel housing, have a friend run it up to about 40mph as u listen with a hose or stethescope to pinpoint the noise

97 ford 4x4 expedition rear differential makes a winding noise

Yes this can be fixed. Sounds like your spider gears have decided to cause you problems. If you can't do the repairs yourself take it to a good gear shop. They can replace the shims and or bearings. Do not attempt this if you know nothing about setting up gears. Don't waste your money by purchasing a used differential. Like I said a good gear shop can do this for you. Shouldn't cost to much.

1997 ford expo makes loud clasking noise

If it was your cranshaft making that kind of noise.your motor would have frozen up already.it seems more like a tranny problem than an engine problem. Take it to a good mechanic. It sounds like your tranny is about to go.
