The first item to look into is the a;alternator and the surrounding parts.

Here's the check list

alternator turning smoothly?

belt tensioner jumpy/hopping/swing?

worn belt?

locate the knock sound....most likely from belt tensioner and belt.

Check voltage on battery. It should be between12.6-13.4V

Good luck

There is a lot involved in the electronic's on your vehicle , FEM - front electronic module ,REM - rear electronic module , the instrument cluster is a module also . The main light switch is a input to the instrument cluster , the instrument cluster is connected to the FEM - REM via a serial data network . Could be that your problem is a simple wiring issue , shorted to ground , shorted to B+ voltage etc.... Then again, could be one of these modules is acting up. Checking the wiring harnesses for bare spots ,rubbing on body metal parts etc.... Checking for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes in all the modules on the vehicle ,not just OBD2 , need a professional type scan tool to do that. Viewing wiring diagrams an testing electrical circuits with a DVOM - digital volt ohmmeter . Do you know any of this ?

What is the hold light?

First thing you should do if the service engine light is on, if you can still safely drive the vehicle, is bring it to your local auto parts store. Ask them if they could plug a diagnostic reader into the OBD connector located under the drivers-side dashboard. It's important to read any error codes from the computer to aid in further diagnostics. Most auto parts stores will do this for free as a courtesy to potential customers, you just need to ask them.

O/D light flashing, hard shifting at times

Sounds like the solenoids are not working correctly in your transmission. May need to be rebuilt. Check with your local transmission shop about this problem.

Low oil pressure when engine is under load.

What you describe is signs of a failing oil pump. As the pump gets more and more out of spec the more it will act this way. If the pressure is dropping to the point of knocking plan to install and oil pump in the motor before too long.

Light on dashboard

Did you just have your wheels repleaced? Or alingment done. You will need to press this a button that looks like this (should be on your right hand side by the steering wheel) for about three seconds while it flashes. It just resets something with your monitoring your tire pressure etc.

My 1999 Ford Windstar will not start. Drove it to a friends house just fine and went to leave and it wouldnt start. Havent been having any problems with it. Charged the battery, holds the charge. Will turn...

It sounds like a fuel pump or ignition module. Possibly may have tripped the inertia switch. Look on the passenger side kick panel at your feet. There is a switch there with a red button.Make sure it is pushed down.If not, push it down to reset it.

Sounds to me like it may be a sensor in the transmission. Possibly the shift seleniod or the od sensor itself.

P0171 code, low power, hesitation during acceleration

When in doubt, with ALL Windstar "mystery engine/power train problems, make sure all of the GROUND STRAP connections are clean & tight. Especially the starter ground strap. Sounds silly, but if you've got intermittent "juice" the computer will go out of it's mind and you'll have all kinds of strange results!
