Remove the top manually and refit it and check again If so, you push the big button in the center on the top, then the handle will release and it unlocks the top from the car. You turn the handle to the driver side , then push the handle back up to its place. Then you push or pull the button between the seats to open the top...until it shows on the display its done.
To put it back on, do the same in reverse order. Just remember the handle only turns one way. The best way to do it is to use your right hand, grab it with your palm facing you (under hand) and turn towards driver.
--------------------------
More than likely it is a sensor that is keeping the top from going up/down. Very common is the right piston slider sensor. You can lower the top, but the top will not lock in the down posisiton and the alarm will keep beeping. Since the control moduel does not know the exact posisiton it will not operate. You will need to have the control module scanned to see what fault codes come up.
-----------
also check the rear window regulator if its not functioning this causes to block the top from going up.
There are 2 hydrolic rams that raise and lower your roof. You can just disconect them from the top, then manualy raise and lower the top. But it sounds more like your fluid level is low. Open your trunk and find the pump pull the plug and fill the resiorvor.

My top will not go down

Take it to VW. These electrohydraulic systems are complex and several switches must be working correctly for the top to lower. It has also been caused by a fault VSS ( Vehicle Speed Sensor.) sending a speed signal to the top controller when vehicle is stationary.

Rear window motor failure is common and if window motor is bad, top will not deploy.

VW dealer can scan the controller and hopefully pinpoint the fault. You are not alone !

2003 beetle convertible top detached from window

My problem has been solved. I contacted the VW Customer Service and spoke with an advocate. The advocate and my dealership reached a conclusion and VW has decided to replace the items to alleviate my problem at their cost. Sometimes, dreams come true. Good luck to all of you who have similar problems with your VW Beetle convertible. It took quite a lot of patience and determination on my part, but the VW advocate was sympathetic to my plight since I'd never taken the vehicle anywhere else but the dealership for all repairs. The repairs have not been completed yet, so I cannot say whether or not the dilemma is, indeed, solved.
