I'm assuming your talking automatic here, so if in drive, (D) you should be able to run the highway speeds easily. When put into overdrive, it will shift up from there, and reduce engine RPM's anywhere from 500-1000 RPM's. Just driving around town , you will probably not get to overdrive, as speeds are not high enough for it to shift into overdrive. Take it on highway @ 60mph or so then shift to overdrive & engine should drop down to slower RPM's, unless your accelerating or going up a hill under load, where it will likely shift back down to lower gear until cruising on smooth even road, then will shift back up to OD.

My transmission seems to hesitate at 30-40mph then it smoothes out have changed the fluid and this is still going on could you please give me some kind of clue what this could be ?

Does this happen with the overdrive off or on? If it happens with the overdrive on, then suggest you try it without the overdrive and see if your indications change. The overdrive normally starts to operate in that range. While both are transmission problems the overdrive isn't as hard to repair.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!
It's not wise to drive on overdrive everytime. When you are cruising that's when OD should beused.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

line pressure test the overdrive drum see what the pressure is, it is very possible due to age the seal in the drum is worn out allowing it to slip.

At what speed does the car need to be put into overdrive? what size fuel tank is in the 1992 park avenue?

Your car probably won't go into overdrive below 35 or 40mph.I have a 1993 and I only put it in third gear only when I want it to stay out of overdrive,I always put the shifter in 4Th or overdrive. If your trans jumps hard between overdrive and 3rd gear or is always searching for a gear to be in you should be concerned and have it serviced.18 gallon tank.

Two odd electrical problems 90 Ford Bronco 351W

The voltage regulator controls the rate of charge. Also, if you have bad battery connections (including any small wires on the positive post), that can cause your strange symptoms. Check all grounds too.

Push button overdrive column light flashes, which fuse controls it? transmission still shifts through all the gears, including reverse, overdrive is the only problem

the flashing overdrive light indicates a code for the transmission you need to have your codes read to see what is causing the problem
