It is a drop in -sort of. It's on the bottom side of the engine, under the plastic skip plate. It's still a canister filter, but the housing is upside down. So you slide it up into the housing instead of dropping into it. Does that make any sense?

Remove the oil filter and there is a nut that you take off (same threads as oil filter) the oil filter adapter will become loose, continue to slide it off, on the engine side of the adapter is the O-Ring, replace the o-ring and install in reverse order.

Hello-what size oil wrench would I need to change the oil filter on a 2001 VW Jetta TDI? Is there a particular brand or model needed?

not really. The TDI's have a drop in filter, and you will only be loosening the cover that the filter rests in. It should be hand tightened from the dealership, so a simple oil filter wrench will work. rubber gloves can sometimes disengage it also.

2006 Jetta TDI Tiptronic Maintenance

The tiptronic is not the DSG - two separate transmissions. You don't need to service the tiptronic every 40k like you do the DSG.
VW considers the fluid in a Tiptronic tranny as "lifetime" fluid - it doesn't need to be changed.
