Usually on the harmonic balancer. It's located off the crank shaft in the front outside of the engine. There should also be a pointer attached to the engine block that you use to line up the correct timing marks

Problems of gm

You can rotate the cam/crank into a positon that will not move as you remove the old belt, as long as the new belt places the cam/crank in same position as the old belt had them, it don't matter where the timing marks are. Leave your old belt on, rotate to a position that will not move or have tension on belt, (no matter the marks) and replace the belt. Make sure to recheck timing marks after new belt is installed by rotating the crank/cam back to timing marks, or just trust that the belt was replaced without the cam or crank rotated. Easy off, easy on, just make sure the cam/crank are still in time as the old belt had them located. NOTE: timing marks are there in case of a broke belt, or for a car that has jumped time. As long as cam and crank are held in same positon, and car was in time before the procedure, it don't matter where the timing marks are at during belt replacement.

How to replace a broken timing belt for a 1998 daewoo lanos?? Would there be any head damage?

yes it is quite possible that valves are bent if the cam belt broke or teeth stripped off of old belt, which unfortuneately means removing the cylinder head and getting it repaired (valves replaced and possibly guides) see some of my other posts for cam belt timming marks locations etc...
depending what motor is in your vehicle twin cam or single?

stevenhurc_14.jpg and if its twin cam you usually need cam locking tool for cam gears.

Can i replace the timing belt with out timing the engine if the belt hasn't broke and it is still timed

The cam and crank has marks that must stay in alignment when you replace the belt, you can make your own marks if you are careful. I would recommend getting a manual that shows the marks locations. Once the new belt is installed, turn the crankshaft by hand until it makes at least two complete revolutions and double check your marks before starting the engine.

Changed the water pump on my 1997 passport & now the timing is off.

I assume you are talking about valve timing not igntion timing. If that is the case your water pump maybe run by the timing belt. If it is you would need to completely disassemble the timing cover and set the number one cylinder to TDC (top dead center) on the Compression stroke not the exhaust stroke. Once you do that line the timing marks up on cam gears with marks on the side of the head. Then install a new timing belt and tensioner. It is a good idea to always change the pump and belt together. I would suggest buying a manual for your specific vehicle for specific torque specs and exact locations of components and procedures.

When installing timing belt, where do I place the marks on the cam and the crank?

Go to any autoparts store and get a manual for your vehicle. Installing a timing belt incorrectly can cause major engine damage. If this belt broke while driving you may already have bent valves. Timing belts should be repalced every 60,000 miles.
