I have a 1997 volkswagen golf with a regular 1.8l engine. at cold start after 10-20 seconds of regular idle at around 1000rpm, the car will automatically rev to 3000-3500rpm and stay at this rpm until warm. the when warm will have a rough idle between 750-1000rpm. i have been told 3 different options.
If your car is fuel injection, try changing the cold start temp sender.

figured out the problem after almost $60 at the dealership for a part. its classified as a flange gasket, but in basic terms is known as a throttle plate spacer gasket. replaced it and the car has been fine now for a while.
