Question about Chevrolet Suburban 1500

2 Answers

I changed a dead battery in my 1998 Chevy suburban and hooked up the cables on reverse poles. There was a pretty good arc so I did not attach the cable to the battery. Thinking it might be a faulty alternator I disconnected the power to the alternator and tried to connect the cable to the battery( again - cable to + battery )there was a small arc but I screwed on the cable to the battery. I went in to try to start the truck and there was smoke coming out of my stereo amp.I immediately disconnected the battery. I removed the battery and alternator and had them checked at auto zone, they checked O.K. Returning to the truck and reinstalling the battery and alternator I realized what I had done wrong (reverse battery connection) After connecting the battery correctly the truck would crank but not run. I removed the ignition module and had it checked, it passed. If I put fuel down the throttle body it fires till it runs out of fuel. Could I have blown the fuel pump? is there a fuse somewhere for the fuel pump? Or do you think there is some thing wrong in the electronics dealing with fuel supply? Thanks Mark

The Fuel pump Fuse : Passenger Side - Under the hood - look around the heat / ac area - will be under a cover. The fuel pump is in the tank, you may try tracing the wiring from the fuel pump possibly have a short from excessive heat due to the reverse battery install. Good luck in this repair

There is a relay for the pump.

It is named ECM-B on the relay-fuse box map.

You find the map at page 357 of the Manual. Download the manual here.

Check all other fuse and relays.

How to change a bettery on a 2002 ford focus

Look at your old battery and make note of the brackets installation and the terminal (positive and negative ) locations. Remove the positive cable, then the negative cable where they attach to the battery poles. POSITIVE cables are normally RED.....NEGATIVE cables are normally BLACK. Remove the battery hold down bracket making sure you do not place anything metal across the two battery poles. Install the new battery into the battery tray, attach the hold down brackets, the attach the negative cable end then the positive end. BE VERY CAREFUL and DO NOT GET BATTERY ACID on you or SHORT ACROSS the battery poles with any metalic object. If you have not done this before and are buying a new battery from an auto center....they will...most times.....install the battery for you free of charge

Replaced battery clamps, got in to start it up to find the car totally dead. the battery seems fully charged when I put it on the slow charger. Does this car require a special clamp, and or cable set up?

First Make sure the batter was charged with possitive on the plus and negative on the minus sign. For some crazy reason my battery drained and I charged it by just looking at the colored pads and the previous owner had them on backwards so I basically reversed the poles on my battery. (The car wouldn't start either). Use a volt meter to be sure it will show - minus sign if backwards

Make sure all your cables were reinstalled, (red wire to alternator and starter) Black wires to grounds.

If all that checks and your battery show good voltage try your (Large fuses) mains that are 20,30,40,50,and 60 amps.

Battery in my 98 chevy suburban keeps going dead despite I've had it tested 3 times and all three say its a good battery

Are any lights or accessories on that could cause a battery drain Are you testing it immediately after charging? This will give you a false reading, let the battery stand for a while then test. You may have one or more dead cells. The battery will show its Ok but in reality its pouched! Head on down to your local Canadian Tire and get a new one.

1998 chevy lumina want start changed starter and battery still want start turn key car dead want turn over can start with jumper swicth but want stay running

Have your alternator tested.Your car will not stay running if the alternator is not producing enough power to keep the battery charged. Also have your battery tested and fully charged.Make sure your cables are in good shape.

I installed a new chevy 350 in my 1980 firebird but I have to disconnect the battery or it will drain. When you hook up the cables you get a nice arc so I know that its drawing unwanted power all the time...

You will have to hook up battery and check to see if you see anything on like an interior light etc. If not start pulling fuses one at a time till you find what circuit is causing the draw on the battery. Then you have an idea of where to start looking.

Shifter cable broke in 1998 chevy suburban

Ok, Disconnect it from the Tranny First. This will make it easier to Fish Through. Connect the New Cable on the Tranny. Follow where the Old one Goes with the New one, Removing the Old one as you go. It will enter the Cab and work it's way up to the Sterring Column. You will Need to remove the Dash Panel to Access the Cable on the Shifter, It just Pulls Loose. You are at the Hardest Part of this at this Point. Let me know if you cannot access the Shifter From this Point. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

Battery arcs

you could have put in a shorted starter, or

you could have put the big wire to the ground bolt instead of the bolt at the starter solenoid.

tnx 4 using fixya,
