Question about 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

No fire in the stove

Will not fire. All fuses are good, put a little down the throttle body and still no fire. I did notice that the gas gage and the voltage gage stay bottomed out but the oil pressure gage moves a little. Possible ECM malfunction?

Check power at the ignition switch first...it not only should send power to starter but needs to activate the accessory circuit in the run position. Got spark?

Why won't it start?

Check fuel pump fuse, if fuse is good, most likely a bad fuel pump vor clogged fuel filter. Without knowing the make and model hard to say where each is located. Fuel pump is most likely in gas tank unless its an older vehicle.

Hard to start keeps cranking then fires over and engine flutters but still doesnt start till 2 more times then when you take off you give it gas and it bougs down and no power pops then after it warms up...

check for codes, if none then check fuel pressure and volume with a gage. pressure should be in the area of 35lbs unless this is throttle body which is about 15/18lbs pressure, if this is a vortec motor the pressure is 55lbs. the volume should be about 1 liter in 15 seconds. the vortec injection systems have a problem with the spider fuel lines that go to each injector cracking/breaking causing no fuel supply and leaking into the intake manifold and not going into the cylinders.

The only matter there should be in the throttle body is air. The throttle body in no way has anything other than "nothing" in it. The liquid you see could be the gasoline you threw into the throttle body.

Getting back to your problem. Do NOT have someone looking down the throttle body while you are trying to start the engine. That person may receive a haircut he will never forget! Get the battery charged. Try to start the engine because even though you think you put too much gas in the throttle body, it may start.

The tricky part. If the engine starts and runs for a few seconds, then you are having a problem with fuel delivery and that is the fuel pump most of the time but not always.. If it does not start at all, try one more time to pour gasoline into the throttle body, hold your foot about 1/2 way down on the pedal and then try again to start it. If it still doesn't start, it's time to check for spark.

Hello, just had this problem myself. Check your EGR valve by pulling the vacume line off and pushing up under the valve put your finger over the vacume line hole and release the valve, if it returns to normal position then its bad if not its good. If its bad it needs replaced. Mine did the exact same thing and thats what it was. Hope this helps

I've got a '97 4.3 l. It ran great. Left the drive and died. It hasn't started since. I have good spark, 59lbs of preasure at the schrader valve on the fuel line. 110 to 122lbs of compression. It cranks...

does it have a throttle body system or the spyder injection system? if regular throttle body dump some gas into the throttle body and see if it runs that way. if it runs it may be you have a bad computer grounding issue. check all wires grounded to the body for good connection. it could be a bad timing chain. Mabey it jumped a tooth or 2. burnt valves could also be a problem. cranking as if it has a hard spot could mean the firing order is off or it has jumped time, the possibilities are many, but hope this helps. good luck.

Try spraying the idle air passage in the throttle body with a carbuator cleaner while the engine is running, you will have to hold the throttle to keep the engine from dieing. If that helps a little than you may have to remove the idle control valve from the throttle body and try cleaning it out with a carburator spray cleaner and also spray clean the idle passge in the throttle body.Or you may have to replace it,
The idle vale should be on the left side on the side of the throttle body -- passenger side --- with two torx head screws holding it down. It has a three wire quick connect plug that looks like a race-track--- rectangular/oval.
Good Luck.

PVC simply recycles the blow by gases. You have either blown a fuse, or your fuel pump is not delivering gas to the motor.

Wont start or stay on

From the info you provided, it seems like it is not getting constant supply of fuel. I think that don't have a carburator. It has a TBI(Throttle Body Injector. You should hear a faint humming noise at the back coming from within the fuel tank when you turn the key on. Thats the fuel pump. Your fuel pump may have gone out.
